I recently bought a Optimus 1550 only fired a few times.
Haven't cleaned it yet. So know I have to do that, but why does the flame die and it backfires if I clean the nozzle when lantern is hot after some min 30 minutes of problem free function?
It holds pressure well, takes two preheat with meths preassurized and then starts well.

    Hello Matti,
could be a Problem caused by not enough velocity while cleaning.
I had similar problem with other lamps.
I could solve the problem by turning the wheel to move the pricker up and down very fast forward (upper position) and backward (lower position).
    Regards,
    Steven

Yes I find that too, I spin the control to about 9 o'clock position then quickly to 3 o'clock, I have a couple of lamps which need this, I've actually seen it blow the mantle apart if it is done slowly.
One thing I noticed is its worse when the gap between the j tube and jet is open up a bit more.

However, the "cleaning" with the pricker should only be done, if it is necessary, e.g. clogging by carbonisation while running.
Otherwise the hole of the nozzle gets worn out (to big diameter) over the time.
