Hi all I was wondering if one of you fettling veterans can help, I've finally got around to taming a Bialaddin bowl fire but the pump is missing the little brass washer / support and the nut to hold the leather on. Are these nuts easy to find or are they some obsolete thread pitch, does anyone happen to know the inner / outer diameters? I'd check myself but I have nothing accurate enough for the ID, I almost bought a huge set of assorted micrometers from a junk shop to test the diameters but then it occurred to me (and my other half) that a) these would need / deserve their own restoration before use, opening yet another can of worms and b) the house already looks like Steptoes yard. Thanks all
Hi there It will be a B.A or Whitworth or possibly B.S.F thread form Unfortunately I have just moved house so all in boxes and looks like the description you have there I’m sure someone will be along shortly to help Good luck with the fettle ps you need a vernier calliper and should be able to get one online for a reasonable amount.. they are very useful
It's a bit odd- the nut is the same size A/F as a 2BA, but threaded 4BA, with a groove across it underneath. The washer is a "top hat" type with a raised spacer for the leather, plus after about 1970 they added a horseshoe washer between the nut and the leather. Your best bet would be to get hold of a donor pump rod, as you can't just use regular hardware.
Many thanks all, I was afraid that would be the answer, I suppose the only consolation is that there is no shortage of spare pump rods going around. I was fool enough to lend my callipers out, I think that was c.2018 so I reckon its time to bite the bullet and sort out a replacement, £10 seems reasonable. You've got to love Lidl, the semi official sponsor of CPL Even more foolishly I did not buy that set of micrometers and they have now been snapped up, if it was one of you who gazumped me may your mantles turn as black as your soul but tbh I suspect the other half just paid the £20 to lob them in a canal and nip that one in the bud. I do believe it had a couple of internal bore micrometers in there as well, they would have been perfect for this one (now solved) task and nothing else, my regret is strong....
@steerpike451 - I think the larger dimensioned 4BA nut was used on electrical connectors and certainly british telephones in times gone by. I don't think anyone makes them anymore but square ones are still available from model engineering suppliers.
