Hello all I have seen these lower bug catchers on the Tilley X246B, one way up and the other way down what is the right way these should go? Can someone tell me if my photo is the correct way please and thanks. This is the way I have put mine on.
The insect screen in your image is upside down which makes it difficult to clip on the preheater torch. Try it and see.
@Henry Plews i does indeed looks better that way but functionality talking it would be more difficult to get it going
In the fixed post in this forum, by @Tony Press the direction of an insect screen is illustrated though I presume it is the split screen versus the later one piece. I guess the wrapping over the globe edge would be consistent. What do I call this part?: Tilley

Great work my fellow lampies, One of the reasons why I asked this question was I haven't even lit an X246B and I was seeing the bug catcher both ways, I wanted to know the correct way so I can pass on the information as well, thanks to all.
There are other parts diagrams around in addition to the one @ROBBO55 has shown, which also show the lip downwards position of the guard as is also the case in the photo above shown by @Tony Press. The original Tilley and later Kayen guard went up but fitted the old globes well. The broader spring splitting guard obviously went lip upwards as I pointed out earlier, and fitted over the downward globe lip. I take @Henry Plews point about ease of use with the torch and yes the lip downwards approach with the 'one-piece' insect guard seems to snugly fit the globe gap but leaves little edge for gripping. Photos in the gallery seem to indicate common usage is both ways. Demonstration images in CPL also usually show them all facing same direction. Seems really odd when you think about it that the lip up approach of the earlier two types of guards changed with the last version but it is what it is. Now I am going to feel conflicted when I put them on the 'wrong way'
@Sedgman I guess is a case of “it fits on what ever way looks the best”. Personally, I install them lip up coz it seems to fit the globe’s edge. Additionally, it appeals to my sense of engineering order ....... my lovely lady says that I have OCD but I correct her and say it’s “CDO”. Either way it will do the job it’s intended to do. Remembering that my memory isn't what it used to be, I did some checking up and it seems that Pete is quite correct when the insect screen is on a lantern. Not so on a TL120A or any other table lamp fitted with the shorter 606 vapouriser.
Just slide it down the vapouriser. As long as the screen is curved downwards, it's not difficult to use at all.

I believe the torch is used below this style of insect screen as shown in this document. https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/x246b-diagram.6859/#post-156172 It works for me.
Not a problem (it may depend on the vaporiser you use and which lamp) the two pork pie table lamps will need long vaporisers or heat proof fingers for either type bug screens

I knew I had the information somewhere, finding it took time. I can't decide whether the leaflet is early or late, there is no mention of the TL120A as there is on other Instruction leaflets I've seen.
Henry. I can't find that note in instructions but it refers to part 1857 which was used on table lamps TL106. The spring clip on type is part 898 which was for X246 lanterns fits the other way with the lip facing up. ::Neil::
Neil, I realise the instruction I posted was referring to the curved shield even though there is no image of it. I have seen paperwork where instructions for the X246B and "How to assemble your" TL120A are on the same sheet and which clearly show the curved 1857 shield. What I can't remember is whether the shield is depicted curved up for the lantern and down for the lamp or curved down for both lantern and lamp.
Well, so much for my memory, I have at last found a copy of instructions for the Stormlight and Table Lamp. Much like the illustration posted by Neil the difference being that there is no part number assigned to the insect shield. Full leaflet here (subscribers only) STORMLIGHT Model X24
By using the longer 7" vaporizer, you can fit the bug screen to hug the globe, AND light comfortably!
