Hey all ! Today i've changed the original X164 Tilley's mantle by a new one that i've bought on eBay. These mantles fit perfectly on Tilley X246B and there is 2 holes as the original brand. Once burned, the shape if really good. The great thing about these ones is they are Thorium coated and provide a more white colored light comparing the X164 (About 3000 - 3500K). The result is clearly better than the original, maybe 30% more efficient than the X164. I'll sent a picture of the Tilley running this night (as i've changed the mantle this morning). The next step, i'll try the Petromax 350CP 2 hole's mantle. Have a nice day !
@Hebusletroll Hey. I also use these mantles and they work well Are you sure they are Thorium coated? Tom
I also use these mantles. They must be Thorium, the light they give is very white. The light from yttrium mantles is more like a very pale yellow.
Hi Tom. Yes, they are Thorium coated as mentionned by the vendor. I've tested the light rendering using my campingaz torch : - Original X164 provide a Warm Yellow light as i've published in a previous topic : My First Tilley X246B Running - The new mantle is very much brighter with a powerfull white light. Same results when the lamp is burning. Of course i still use same kerosen as usual : QLIMA Krystal Petrol. I'll publish a picture soon. Regards.
Good evening Here you can find my Tilley burning with Thorium Coated mantle. As you can see, the light is bright white. Great !
I use these ultra bright mantles as well, bright white and sturdy. And and good deal price wise. https://www.tilleylampsandstoves.com/product-page/tilley-lamp-ultra-bright-mantles
Hello ^^ I've take some time today to dismount and cleaning the Generator / Vaporiser : the result is incredible better ! Here's the update. I will test Korean alternative vaporiser from kkn4602 eBayer as i read that new Tilley version seem's bad quality. I'll give you a feedback about this in an new post as soon as possible. Have a nice day !
I’ve been using those as well and they are a very nice mantle. Actually sold a number to other collectors in the states and they like them too.
I'm currently camped out in the Sturt's Stoney Desert and relying on my 50 year old Tilley for illumination and warmth at night. (yes, it gets cold at night here this time of year). Will be here for two more weeks and the lamp as usual works fine. As I had some of these mentioned mantles as spares I fitted one the other night to use the brighter illumination. Bright yes, but on the second night a hole appears in the mantle, so I fitted another and within another two nights it's holed again. Never had this problem with the other. brand mantles and now I'm down to two spares. Very disappointed with these. Also the string is flimsy
These also work well, available in Thorium & Yttrium. Peerless DT-140 Double Tie Mantle 2 Pack Yttrium
Hi there Sometimes tiny pieces of carbon have been known to blow a hole after the pricker has been operated or through the fuel having small particles.. Not easy or even possible when camping to clean out tanks and vapourisers but if a new mantle doesn’t help maybe worth a shot? hope your trip goes ok regards pb
the remaining two spare ultra bright mantles I had only survived another couple of nights before large holes blew in them. after much rummaging found one spare generic mantle in the bottom of a box of odds and sods, so carefully fitted it and for the remaining ten days camped out in the middle of nowhere it performed faultlessly with no mantle deterioration therefore I don't think the cause was tiny foreign particles holing the mantles, but rather a problem with the mantle material. best of all., I was out there gold prospecting and found some nice specimens
yes, I've used Peerless in a Coleman lamp I have and found them to be very good. now that I know they also make mantles suitable for Tilleys I'll get some
AliExpress now stock double tie mantle that are 100mm in diameter. I have some ordered to test as they should be OK for Tilleys and Bialaddins. It is possible to untie the end of a standard Butterfly (or copy) mantle and use them in this way but if these work OK, so much the better. Yes, they're Chinese and yes there will likely be quality control issues... but how many of the mantles being sold by western suppliers are actually produced in China? I read a while ago that Coleman's are and probably Petromax also.
