Hello Folks, Is anyone able to confirm the diameter and height of a Primus 1001 Glass Globe? The cage internal diameter will accept a max 142mm diameter glass but would be a tight fit, the hood a 140mm diameter glass with a little wiggle room. The glass I have been supplied (specified for a 1001 and 1050, what dia is a 1050 glass?), is nominally 128-129mm diameter, its effectively a 1/2" rattling fit within the cage/hood and covers vent intake holes depending where it sits in the base. I appreciate there will be manufacturing tolerances at play but would like a datum to work from if possible. I just want to make sure of sizes before I hunt for different glass or get a couple of micas made by Fred Alec.
The diameter should be 135mm. The height is not as easy. One early catalogue mentioned 135mm for the height. A Swedish friend had some glasses made up with this height and they were too high. From experience, about 130 to 132 is about right. Fred has made micas for the 1001 before so he should have the size on file. The 1050/1051 uses the same size glass as the 1001.
Thanks Nils, 135mm would be a good fit with a bit of clearance This glass appears to be too short, it doesn't sit inside the hood, it swirls around beneath it. In the rim of the hood are three small tabs, it looks as if the glass should fit within these as a kind of anti-rattle device. I think Fred is the answer, I'll report back... Alec.
I have never seen a description of these in any Primus paperwork, but I believe these were used mainly together with the mica. The original 1001 did not have a lighting door, so to light it you had to lift the hood and glass. To hold the glass up, there was a small bracket on one of the uprights of the globe cage for the first couple of years (gone by 1930). Anyway, I think the mica was fixed under the tabs and it came up together with the hood. I'm not sure if there would have been enough pressure from the tabs to hold a glass but they do act as a way of keeping the glass in line.
Today I received a Swedish care package of a 1001 In it was an original glass and its the largest, most delicate Primus glass I have encountered For reference (and to remind me when I forget again in the future )....... It is near enough as @Nils Stephenson says, the example I have measuring at 136mm Overall Diameter, 132mm High, with a wall thickness of 1.1 to 1.3mm Lovely thing... Alec.
