It does not leak when unlit. Hoqwvwr whwn I light it it leaks paraffing all over de floor and Im worried about fire. I believe something should be left open but not sure what ?
Empty the fuel out, remove the glass, pump it up and dip it into a bucket of water to find the leek...
Irish Dad pranked by daughter with 'leek under the sink' gag - Ireland Calling (ireland-calling.com) There are a couple of 'magic' words in the video at the bottom of the page so if you watch it and get upset, don't blame me...
To start it I am adding paraffin to the pre heating cup and allowing it to burn for maybe 5 minutes then pumping a few times
Thank you I have just read the instructions. But it's still leaking and the leak seems to be coming from that mainstem
Hi Angus Have you replaced all the seals? Almost impossible to use the old ones as they harden and crack Read and re read instructions until you know them off by heart Pre heat with meths Not paraffin Good luck and don’t forget the photos are worth a lot of texts!
So you did see and found a leak. What did you do to stop it leaking? In other words please tell us how handy you are with apparatus which use flammable fuel under pressure with an open flame.
Correct terminology helps. The "tube" / "mainstem" is called a vapouriser - also spelt vaporiser / vaporizer. The "main can" is more commonly called (fuel) tank, fount or font.
It sounds like you're going to need to replace all the seals. The best place to get them is The Fettlebox - see their block advertisment at the top right of this page (third box down). Or click on this link:- Bialaddin & Vapalux - The Fettlebox You'll need either kit V5 or W5 depending on the diameter of your fuel cap - scroll down to the bottom...
Possible, I prefer first to check if the vaporiser is still "good in place" and doesn't need a twist to stop a leakage.
The vaporizer didn't appear to be slack. However I think the paraffin( I now know I should have used meths )was leaking from the pre heat cup down the stem somehow because I can lift up the Preheat cup so there must be a gap between the cup and the mainstem,. Although when I add methelated spirits to the pre heat cup before burning it doesn't seem to leak
It's only when I pump the pressure handle that the paraffin piesses out the mainstem vaporizer tube what does that signify to you experts?
Jet cleaner should be closed, use meths in cup twice; open valve before meths go out and add 10 pumps; lamp should light. Let burn like this for 30 seconds to a minute then add more pressure. Paraffin that is normally left in the vaporizer can get warm enough to burn but not be hot enough to vaporize into a gas; that is why you want the tip cleaner closed. There is a seal below the valve and a seal behind the knob on the valve; if the lamp leaks while it is lit then it’s probably one of these two seals.
Sorry to say but it means you haven't studied the principle or manual long enough. It's a machine. So you have to know what and why.
It signifies a cold vapouriser ! You are not preheating the vapouriser correctly. Get onto Youtube and type "How to light a Bialaddin lantern" in the search bar and see what comes up. Don't just have a look at one video, watch three or four but DO NOT bother with this one, most of what the guy says and does is a load of rubbish ! @Angus1745 I posted a Bialaddin Instruction and Maintenance Manual in the Reference Library (open to subscribers). https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/bialaddin-instructions-1949.18693/ It gives clear and straightforward instructions, and good information on the operation and care of your lantern. These lanterns are the bees knees and should give you more than a lifetime of loyal and efficient service. Cheers Tony
