I recently acquired an American Gas Machine No 3927-A lantern that has a non-functional air pump. I am new to the world of old lantern repair and I'm having some trouble locating sources of replacement parts or information on suitable substitutes. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I am not sure if there are any compatible parts for this pump. What is the problem here? Non functioning can be as simple as a worn leather which is a simple fettle. A bigger problem is a failed check valve and to fettle that you need to remove it first. We need more precise detail and an image or two might be handy. ::Neil::

Thanks, Neil. I'll try to get some pics up tonight. The gasket that seals the piston against the piston is badly worn and does not seal at all. The lantern may have other problems but I am starting with what I can see.

Here are some pictures of the pump piston, pump barrel, and the complete lantern.

Yeah, that's that funky design where the pump shaft is basically a screwdriver that engages the air screw. You spin the pump gently until it drops into the slot and unscrew it a turn or so and pump. Then re engage it and tighten the screw. I had one bunged up really bad and ended up retrofitting a Coleman pump tube for lack of parts. If it's operational, however, I'd leave it as is. May just need a leather or oil.

Looks to me you just need a new leather. I am pretty sure a Coleman will fit OK. Measure the pump tube. Coleman are 20mm dia. If you get the same then fit a Coleman leather. You might need to clean out the check valve but you can often sort that by pumping some carb cleaner through it. ::Neil::

I swapped in the Coleman part and here is the result. I still have some leak hunting to do, but I do have a working lantern. Thanks guys!
