Hi, I am refurbishing an 1954 Australian made Coleman 249 Scout, on dismantling the lamp I removed the pressure knob and discovered that the graphite packer had disintegrated. Does anyone know where I might be able to source such a packer because it is extremely hard to find in Australia. Also new generators for the product ? The generator is a mongrel thing with two twirly springs in the centre. Who designed that ouch? Is there something else I can use?

OldColemanParts sell replacement generators for the 249.

The 201 generator is more readily available and the jet and cleaning needle will fit in the 249 generator.

    Hello Tonebone
I was very interested to hear/see your comments about your 249Scout.

Did you see this resource for the 249
    http://www.oldcolemanparts.com/diagrams/249.jpg
I'm not sure how the 249Scout differs from this.

My Son has a 247Scout and there doesn't seem to be much information about Scout models and what variations they have, from their numeric siblings.

The 247Scout ("frame rest"/collar) states that it can be fueled with "gasoline or kerosene".
I'm wondering if your 249Scout has the same sort of information on its "base rest/ frame rest/collar"?

Yet, I understand that 247 models are kerosene only, see below:

I'll try to document our 247Scout on this site soon in the "Reference Gallery" section later this week.

But in regards to your comment about a "Mongrel Generator(!)". Its an incredibly simple thing and it must of worked just fine and been easy to service and clean for the lantern to have survived.
Coleman Canada must have subscribed to the K.I.S.S. philosophy, because it worked for settlers/farmers in remote areas across Canada, North America, & presumably the Australian Outback. (I assume that you live in the State of Victoria, Aust., and not Victoria, Vancouver Is.?)

    Regards

Hello thoskiwi, my 249 states on the globe rest that its for kero only, I was probably being a bit harsh on the Generator, you are probabaly correct in relation to how simple they are. But they are a mongrel to take to bits and put back together especially when you cant buy a replacement in Australia. The other Item you can't buy is a graphite valve packer. I purchased another 249 scout on e-bay yesterday for $20.so it looks like I will have another to restore I can't wait. I also managed to buy a coleman table lamp with a date stamp of 1/49 stamped on the fount. It is a beautiful looking lamp needs fettling though

You can use Teflon or PTFE for valve packing. Not as good as the original graphite perhaps but readily available and it will stand the heat. Just unscrew the packing nut and wind a turn or two of twisted PTFE gas tape around the spindle and then replace the nut and tighten. ::Neil::

    Hi

Contact "Trojandog" here he has graphite sheet which you can cur & wrap round the spindle then compress down with the spindle nut to make a new graphite packing piece 8)
