    Evening Gentlemen,
I recently bought a Hasag 351L and immediately upon receipt of it I stripped it down to clean everything up. I found that the cleaning needle had broken off inside the jet and have replaced both with a new jet and needle that were supplied with the lantern. The jet clearly has a "B" stamped on it, which I assume means Benzin or Coleman fuel. I have reassemble it after cleaning and have replaced the filler cap gasket and the NRV seemed fine with no leaks. I have allowed the lantern to preheat by filling the preheat cup twice with alcohol, but I am getting nothing but orange flames around the mantle. I am using a Peerless 24A mantle which is about the size of a Coleman 99. I have blown all the air tubes out, have a new jet, cleaning needle and the vaporizer was clean as a whistle. Can anyone give me an idea of what I am doing wrong? Its my first Hasag, so its all new to me. Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide. Here is a photo when I received it:

Hello Dan, good find! I'm not positive, but this may be a paraffin/kerosene lantern, a few more photos would help.

It does have a pressure release valve on the filler cap, which is not common on petrol/gasolone lanterns.

Does it have a positive shut off valve like a Coleman petrol/gasoline lantern or does that knob just operate the pricker control??

Having the glass fitted helps a lantern to preheat properly, but if this is a paraffin/kerosene lantern and you have Coleman fuel in it, then the hole in the jet may be to large for that fuel.

Some of the other collectors on this website may be able to offer more precise information, Jeff.

Good morning Jeff and thank you for the reply. You are correct in that the valve assembly is not the positive shut off like that on a Coleman lantern, but its like that of a valve on a Petromax. I thought the same, but the "B" on the jet caught me off guard so that is why I thought it was setup for Benzin. The jet hole is very small when comparing it to my Coleman jets. I'll try to get some additional photos of it today and post. It cleaned up well after some elbow grease. Fred Kuntz may be coming over today with a globe that he had made for it, so hopefully I can get a globe in it to help with pre-heating. The globe on this is slightly shorter than that of a Coleman Quicklite, so I do not have one that will work. Thanks again for your reply and I'll look forward any and all suggestions.
    Best,
    Dan

Hello Dan, perhaps you should try it with Paraffin/Kerosene.

I would never use Petrol/Gasoline in a lantern which does not have a positive shut off valve and has a pressure release valve, Jeff.

HASAG model 351L is a kerosene lantern. You can use gasoline or alcohol to preheat it but the instructions say it takes three minutes to pre heat and that means the main fuel is Kero not gasoline. ::Neil::

Thanks Neil and Jeff. That "B" on the jet threw me off completely and my next try will be with kerosene. I also read a post on CCF where a guy had an Aida with the straight vaporizer and he claimed it also ran on gasoline, so I figured I'd try it. Probably just got lucky as it could've gotten ugly  . Once I get the globe on it, I'll give it a proper preheat and report back with the news. Thanks again!!!

Absolutely, but having said that, the multihole shroud around the priming dish is almost exactly the same as on a Monitor Regal C16 stove (paraffin-primed) and similar to that on the Tilley paraffin pre-heaters.

I could be miles off, but that makes me wonder if this lantern wasn't also kerosene primed. Otherwise, why the shroud?

Just wondrin' aloud, no more than that...

as most german hasag-users, i use gasoline or white gas in my 351 L-lanterns as the were designed to run on either gasoline and kerosene.
    preheating is done with alcohol.
never had any problems with this combination, but anglo-american users don´t like gasoline in these lanterns
the "L" means, that preheating can be done with kerosene.

did you check the vapourizer ? it has at the end, which is in the tank, a kind of pressed mesh, which sometimes doesn´t let any fuel into the vapourizer if it is too dirty.
