Could someone be so kind to explain to me the differences between a coleman #99 an a 999 ?
    Thank you.

    Me, too.

I wish Coleman would just say which is the correct number mantle for each of its lanterns instead of something vague like 'use a 300cp mantle' I've generally got no idea what the claimed light output of any of their lanterns is and I certainly don't know which mantles are 300cp or 500cp or what. I end up having to ask every time.

In fact, if it's a, say, 300cp twin mantle lantern, does that mean each mantle is, in fact, 150cp? Or what? - I haven't a clue... ](*,)

What's the point of a twin mantle set-up anyway? - apart from having you buy twice as many mantles, that is. Perhaps it's to give a better spread of light by avoiding shadows from the [strike]vapouriser[/strike] generator and air-intake tube. They could have avoided that by designing the lanterns properly in the first place with a central vapouriser going through the mantle and a burner which takes in air centrally from above. Rather like Tilley and Bialaddin/Vapalux, in fact... ;)

O my God I've found a companion with my
Fu**ing coleman issue! Thank you David :D/ .I just don't know where I am with these mantles,
I do believe it's some kind of coleman conundrum? Only if you worked for coleman will you understand the inner workings of there designers. ](*,) :rage:

Here is the evidence! 2 identical packets apart from single mantle an double mantle, one says 300cp an the other 300 cp to 350 cp. Come on coleman give us a clue?

How that chart is supposed to be useful is beyond me.

    What's the difference between a #21 and a #21A? A #11 and a #1111? A #99 and a #999?

If I try them and they don't work, I've just wasted a mantle. And I'm no further forward - I've then got to try something else. Why don't they just tell us, for God's sake!!

Actually, I think the answer is the same as why they're vague about how much fuel to put in the tank, for instance - fear of litigation. Dumb-ass end users have a drama and rush to the courts to seek compensation for their own stupidity brought on by a risk-averse, nanny state education system that seems to teach them nothing beyond they're awesome, invincible and the world owes them a living.

I think I'd better go and lie down in a darkened room for a couple of hours... ;)

It kind of helps in that the 99 seems to be the same as the 999 and the 11 as the 1111.

For me, it was a case of, I need this mantle for this lamp. Do I have it? If yes, great, if not, what's the closest to use?

I then discovered the Peerless mantles and have used them pretty much ever since, relying on my google-fu (which is still rather weak) to work out which one to use with which lantern (and then promptly order the wrong ones :rage: )

    Was the darkened room therapeutic?

Did it also require a single malt?

I'm with you on the Coleman mantle saga. There are a couple of Peerless mantle traders who are members of CPL. Maybe they could shed some light on which of their mantles are suitable for which lanterns.

    Cheers

Have a look at the chart below. It is incomplete but should prove useful all the same. I'm open to any suggestions, corrections, additions and modifications.

That's a good peerless chart Phil I'm not so sure about the coleman chart that says to use 99 or 999 on a 335 I've always found them to be a little small, the peerless 24a works beautiful an the mantle fills correctly .I use peerless on all single tie lanterns now but I've not been able to get any DT-140s yet.

Thanks, Gozzy, Yes I agree that the 335/339 can use the 24A. It is a long mantle and a smaller diameter than the 111. The 335/339 easily fills it. The 99 and 22A are the same diameter but shorter, therefore better suited to the 250-300cp lanterns.

Absolutely Phil, I think it's a case of suck it an see but i do also agree with David when he moans about wasting mantles to find the right one that's the beauty of cpL you can always let someone else waist mantles to get the right information (not me)God bless the experimental punter!

With the wide variety of lamps and lanterns found in South Africa there is ample opportunity and often need to experiment. A good thing I don't pay retail for the mantles

Still, the air in my workshop turns blue when I unintentionally break a mantle ... :rage:

Hey all, I think I used to belong here many moons ago when I had a mammoth collection of pressure lamps. Those days are long gone and sold most of my collection years ago.

So, the reason for my post is this. I recently purchased a Coleman northstar propane lantern for my property (U.S. made in 99 thankfully) and always remembered what a pain in the ass the original mantles were. I was looking at the peerless chart in this thread and was wondering if there is a sock mantle that is large enough and long enough to take the place of the accordion mantle on the Northstar. I remember having a coleman gas lantern from canada that had a much larger sock mantle that the standard mantle.

Thoughts? I don't really care if I can't turn the Northstar all the way up, would like the convenience of tie on mantle vs the accordian clip mantle.

I wonder if anyone has tried this already, if not, someone probably should have hahahaha.

    Looking forward to your replies.

I’ve burned a Northstar with a big Butterfly 600+cp single tie mantle. It worked fine. [Torch lighting, though].

    @Rod

The mantles should be on eBay.

Torch lighting: lighting with a torch soaked in alcohol; not using the useless “Instalight”.

    Cheers
