I know it’s originaly from an Victorian/Edwardian oil lamp but just had to try this shade on the KL80. I think the cranberry colour works well, even though it’s a little too long, so won’t be staying on this one, just like an excited little boy at Christmas. I had to try it lol.
Thanks guys, I agree it does look nice. It’s about an inch longer than the opaque shade I usually have on it, so I noticed straight away that when I preheated it was a little awkward to clip on and remove the soaked wick. But once alight it looks great. Plus the extra length produced a little more draw on the flame when preheating, so was really easy to atomise the paraffin and get it shining bright. Anyway I will continue playing with different shades and settle on one in the end, it’s just an excuse to play in the workshop;-)
Dear all I want to know the frame for Tilley KL80 is original design or not. I have never seen this before
No, it is not original. The basket (where the tank will sit) would have held a wick lamp. Notice the relatively modern screws and the recently drilled and countersunk hole which is off-centre.
Hui, No, Tilley never made this kind of frame. What they did make was this shaped tank that would sit in old wick lamp fittings which made it less expensive for people to upgrade to a brighter light. Here is another type of stand originally meant for a wick lamp. See how the Tilley sits in this stand and how it sits in a genuine Tilley harp frame
