Hi there, just to introduce myself and ask a question or two.. My name is Terry from North Wales and I have acquired a TILLEY 246 Guardsman as an introduction to this fascinating hobby. The Control cock has a fine gauze underneath in order to catch detritus. However it seems to be a permanent fitting? There is no sign that it is anything but a moulded part of the body? That is to say unscrewable by any method at all. Were any control cocks made this way? I have a second control cock and the filter and attachnment is moveable, cleanable and able to be reassembled without a problem. Secondly....on ALL Tilley lamps, when I finally use the control cock to open the fuel and allow the lamp to burn bright.......Is it the case that the control knob is ALWAYS moved clockwise to CLOSE, then anti clockwise to approx the middle to OPEN and only moved anti clockwise from the centre to PRICK? Thirdly, when fettling the control cock is there any need to disassemble the "cam"??... mechanism, indeed is it possible to dismantle the cam mechanism....why would anyone want to, does it stand the test of time and perform for years and years without fault? Welcome, @TerryColeman 1. The part of the control cock with the gauze should unscrew. Some of the aluminium ones get stuck solid by corrosion. 2. Clockwise to close AND prick; fully anticlockwise to burn. 3. The cam mechanism is not meant to be unscrewed or serviced. Cheers Tony
That lower part of the control cock always unscrews. It has to because there is the same serviceable spring loaded valve in there which is the same as the pump check valve. All the way clockwise to close and all the way anticlockwise to open. If the mantles burn brighter with the control at centre it’s possible the vaporiser is worn with the jet enlarged and a partial closure restricts the gas flow which leans out the mixture. To use the pricker is a quick full close to full open. The eccentric and cam spindle is not intended to be serviceable and is soldered in place. ::Neil::
