Another exciting day, I've got a 2/300 Austramax. From what I've read on here it seems to be an early version. I wonder if the globe would be original to that period? It says "Agee pyrex" Cheers
@Brian Reynolds The globe is probably correct. Is the pressure release screw a replacement, or does it look original? Cheers Tony
Hi @Tony Press Im guessing it's a replacement but I don't know enough about them. I can't find a pic of a similar screw but it fits perfect Cheers
I'm pretty sure the pressure release screw is a replacement. You should take some more photos of it and put it in the reference gallery. You can see an example of mine here.
@Brian Reynolds I’ve got a spare later pressure release screw that should fit your filler cap. It’s very important that the pressure release on these little Austramaxes seal properly. There are at least two members here who have had vapourised kerosene conflagrations resulting from very hot atomised kero exiting the pressure release. Note: Do not overfill an Austramax. As a rule, never fill it by tipping it on its side then putting the cap back on. Cheers Tony
As a further complication, should the pressurised kerosene come screaming out around the pressure release knob, atomising because of pressure and the small gap it is coming out of, and you have the later model plastic pressure release screw, immediately it catches fire the screw melts and there is no chance of screwing it back down. As Tony suggested, my problem started when I filled the lamp tilted over to keep the filler upright, and then put the cap back on before tilting it back upright, hence not realising it was overfilled. Had I left the lamp burning until the level was below the filler hole everything would have been fine. Oh well, I didn’t like those curtains anyway.
