This is a Gloria and/or Knight generator used in hollow wire systems and pressure lamps. It is 109mm/4.3” long (105mm without counting the tapered threaded end). The bottom and top hex fittings are screwed to the brass tube. The tube has asbestos packing. I am grateful to a fellow Australian collector for this gift to me. Cheers Tony
Tony I’ve been running one in a lantern with success. It doesn’t have the hex up top but fits the mixing chamber well. I’ve chatted with Dean who makes them.
I measure the jet in my Gloria/Knight generator as 0.16mm. The jet in the new reproductions sold at Old Coleman Parts is slightly bigger, as it will take a 0.17mm pricker wire, whereas the original of mine will not. The early Gloria lamps with these generators were often advertised for kerosene or gasoline. @bigredmf Are you able to ask Dean what size jet is in the new Gloria/Knight generators? tony I will reach out and see. Though I’m curious how you are measuring that accurately? I’d almost expect that would be acceptable tolerance along the length of wire.
@bigredmf I use a digital micrometer that measures to 3 decimal places. I measure a pricker wire that fits, and keep going up in increments of wire diameter until a wire doesn’t fit, and use the previous wire as the best approximation. In this case, a 0.15mm wire fitted, as did a 0.16mm wire, but not a 0.17mm wire. The 0.17mm wire fitted the new generator. I think my next wire is about 0.19 but I didn’t use it. Cheers Tony
Here is Deans response!! " Hi Kevin; Sorry for the late reply on this email. It just slipped way down the list and I came across it looking for something else. Didn't mean to make you wait two weeks! On the Gloria and Knight generators I make for OCP, they are for twin mantle lanterns rather than lamps. I don't know if the lamp gens are different from lantern ones. I use an orifice size of .0078", or extremely close to .2mm. One thing that messes up folks trying to measure orifice sizes with wires (which is also how I do it) is if they do not polish the end of the test wire before trying to insert it into the gas tip orifice. If they are using a piece of piano wire, and cut it with wire snips, the snip leaves a tiny burr. It effectively increases the size of the wire. So if you are using a .007" (unpolished) wire to check what is actually an .008" orifice, the .007" wire often will not go in, even though its true size is smaller than the diameter of the orifice. This may be why there is some discussion about the size of orifices. I do know that my repro gens for the Gloria and Knight twin mantle lanterns are .0078", which is as close as I can buy to the standard American size of .008" for these orifices. One other thing. If the orifice hole in the gas tip has been precision drilled, and has not been used, a wire the same size as the orifice will not go into it. It is an interference fit. So, someone may think they have a .007" orifice because .008" wire will not go in, and .007" wire will go in, when they actually have a .008" orifice, which is so popular a size for Coleman 220A-K gas tips. @bigredmf Thanks for posting the response from Dean. That’s very useful information. If you’re in contact with him again pass on my thanks. I do polish the ends of my wires, but it’s a good tip for anyone making their own prickers. The point about the interference fit is also a good tip. I’m running one of my Gloria’s on one of Dean's generators and it works very well (and very bright!). I note that I said would look at the screw ends of the old and reproduction Gloria generators.
