Hi all, I'm Biagio from Italy. I recently restored an Aladdin blue flame 15. The heater is in very good conditions but with gummed kerosene in the tank. I removed it using isopropilic alcool and now the tank is very clean. I changed the wick with a new original one. I filled up with toyotomy clear paraffin and I waith one hour. when I light the heater the flame was blue and very regular bu after 3 minutes the flame go down and if I turn up the wick the flame is blue with red halo but is not regular and paraffin smell is present. strange, but only at lighting the smell is not present!!! It seems thath the paraffin do not reach the upper side of the wick. I use this kind of paraffin for my aladdin mantle lamps without issues. The wick is properly immersed in the paraffin... this is a brain teaser for me Any suggestions? thanks in advance
The first light was made 1 hour after fill with the paraffin but the other light was made after 24 hours. Today it seems a little better ... flame is blue without red halo but only with wick at is lower position and the smell of paraffin is present. Aladdin lamps are smell free in comparison to this heater
Hello and welcome! I hope your heater does start to work as it should . . you say you have a new wick .. that would have been my question but you have eliminated it ps there may be someone who has had the very same issue Do you collect lamps and heaters? Regards pps just seen you said about the smell? The Aladdin lamps will work slightly differently to your heater and are generally odour free .. the pressure type heaters in the gallery here don’t give off much smell
Hi podbros, thank you for replay. I love all objects they use the kerosene/paraffine. I have some lamps (aladdin, tilley, petromax, coleman) pressure lamps and wick lamps, pressure stove, clothes irons. The aladdin heater is my first experience with this kind of heater. In the past I used kerosene heater with cimney (potez and an italian Argo). Now the heater smell again. after 10 hours I moved the wick to increase the power and the red halo with smell are appeared, it seems thath the carbon on the wick light with red halo... but I'm not sure. I want try to change the paraffin but it might be useless. Many people says aladdin heater is smell free...not in my case :-D regards Biagio
Hmm .. I think Aladdin made a wick cleaner for heaters… perhaps it would be worth obtaining one and giving it a try? Sorry, I don’t have a heater like this one.. I hope you can get it to smell better.. good luck ps it sounds like you have lots of nice lamps too !
Hi, I have a lot of lamps in opinion of my friends but not enough for me. I used the wick cleaner following the manual instruction but the flame is blue only for few minutes. The carbon on the upper side of the wick cause the red halo and smell. In my opinion is caused by dry wick in upper side. I tried to change the paraffine with another one but the result is the same. I think I will leave this heater unused.
Well often it is required to "char" a new wick before usage. So the carbon should not be the reason of bad behaviour. New wicks not always perform well because production (location) chances. Shape is of influence, so the wick cleaner mentioned is a good idea. It scrapes the black charred wick in the right shape. Off coarse the rest of the burner should be in good condition too.
Hi WimVe, yes the rest of the burner is in very nice condition. Clean and all parts are not damaged or modified. The wick move up and down without problem. I tried also to resize the wick letting burn out without paraffin in the tank. No one is a valid solution. When I light, the flame is blue and high, after 3 minutes the flame is blue but very low (occasionally with yellow flame) when I turn up the wick the flame is blue with red halo but not regular and the smell is present. In this step, in my opinion, the wick is burning with a little amount of paraffin. I would try to change a wick with another one. (last try) Regards Biagio
You’ve come to the right place then.. we are all ‘lost souls’ here I’m sure you are being careful but I am concerned about the smell it makes.. sometimes that can mean there is CO present? I am sure you will have lots of ventilation where you are working on it Hope you can get it to work satisfactorily Regards
It sounds like a bad wick. The same thing happened to me on a 15''' burner. Changed the wick to a good quality old wick and it worked beautifully.
The gum that was in the tank is also in the wick. Ideally it's a new wick or maybe you can soak it in the IPA and clean it that way?
Hi Nils, thanks for share your experience. I think I solved the problem. I changed the wick with another one ... original but new. I will search a NOS in the future. Now the flame is constant and the smell is barely noticeable. The red (orange) halo is present but I think this is due to the new wick. @JonD: I changed the wick and removed the gummy from tank and central cilinder using IPA. Now the heater don't have a gummy. Regards Biagio
yes, the first is original Aladdin same as second. both of them are the same, same wick, same box. Now the heater is lighted and no issue at this moment.. I hope is resolved.
again... issue not resolved. With second wick it seems better but not enough. I have a lot of paraffin smell. I tried to use the heater in a smallest room and is impossible to live in. I see on ebay thath are available NOS wick with the band yellow. I think my wick are "new production" with the red band. Are there any differences between these wicks? The heater seem burn correctly only at start and after it seems burn with dry wick.
again with solution... the issue of dry wick after few minutes from lighting was due to the dust in the tank... I used isopropilic alcool to wash but a lot of dust remained in the tank. I washed the wick using clean paraffin and rinsed the tank. Now the flame is regular and no smell in the room...is odorless regards
Aladdin series 32 heater Hi @ Biagio. See my post above. Did your new wick cure the problem? I have fitted a new one, Genuine Aladdin, but like you mine has the red halo and dies after a few minutes. Isopropyl Alcohol? Did that help? Thanks
I picked up a Aladdin Blue flame H42202 in fair condition, everything is gummed up as normal from sitting . My question is does anyone have an idea as to what year this is?. Also i pulled the tank and proceding to clean and free up the burner assembly. In doing so when i pulled the fuel gauge cap off the plastic sight broke up beyond repair. Is there any outside chance of obtaining a new or used one? I am sure that others have run into this problem, and maybe possibly have an alternative idea on have to fabricate a sight glass. It is the one that has a small peep hole to view the gauge. Thx in Advance Cliff
Hi @Cliff Aubrey This is in the Uk but they may know somewhere nearer to you? www.hattersleyaladdin.co.uk
Thx for your reply and the link to hattersleyaladdin, i have sent an email to them explaining what i am looking for. Waiting for an answer back. I'm hoping someone has an idea about how to repair or fabricate a replacement sight glass. Thank You Again Cliff
The sight "glass" is mica you might be able to get a large enough piece from a local boiler spares supplier. I can see them pre-cut round and uncut for sale on Ebay UK. And I agree with Wim - that slot on the side that has been cut needs filling
Sorry - just re-read your query. The fuel cap sight glass. Maybe a dial guage repair shop or a watch repair place could help ?
