Hey so my dad recently past away and I inherited these my mom keeps pushing me to sell them but I don't want too!!!!!! It's only some of these that ties me to my dad they were his collection. Can anyone give me more information on these and there might be more I still have a hole basement to go through and that's where I'm finding them in box's and how do I clean them without scratching the crome on the 2 of them I also have 2 ones that are ment for inside use with original glass. So the colemans are no.3470 with a gold bottom and 242 there not dirty just dusty and I know if u take a wet rag and try to wipe dust off you scratch the crome and I don't wanna do that the other 2 are Petromax Rapid 829/500cp super and Optimus 200 P. I'm gonna keep searching the basement cause knowing him there is more hidden
Those are nice pieces to rember your father. You can light those in memory of your father. After some cleanup and precautious check of the safety features, such as the rubber seals etc
So these are the ones for indoor use I was talking about... well one of them I gotta go pick up the other one lol and find more of course.. hopefully...
Thank you... no there perfect condition I mean idk if some of these even had fuel even put in them... can you give me information on values? So I know if I gotta find a way to put them in the gun safe
Thanks!!! I so far I found 2 indoor use ones and 4 outdoor use I don't have the 2ed indoor use with me or else I'll post the pictures so I have 2 Colemans a 242 and a 3470 and the a Optimus 200 P and a Petromax Rapid super
I don't wanna sell them just wanna know if I should put them away so they don't get broken or messed up lol I seen people selling them on ebay but that doesn't help me cause some they fight over and some go for cheap that makes me so mad what makes one more special then the other there the same models!!!!
Hi @RESTINGELF - they are all nice looking lamp and lanterns. I would not put them in the gun safe, but do keep them dry. Some run on Kerosene, some on white gas or coleman fuel. I guarantee if you learn about them, and use them you will enjoy them loads - but do learn otherwise things can go a bit sideways... There are lots of people here who will help you along. It is safe to say that there is a lot of interest in lanterns just now and that is affecting prices - but none of them are going to buy you a car or a house. Better to have fun with them, and sell them later if you need to.
Your father had a nice collection and certainly well worth hanging onto. No need to lock them away in a gun safe, a good strong shelf will do the trick. Now and then can light them so as to bring back memories of your father and the pleasure he had with them.
Hello and welcome @RESTINGELF. Originally, your 3470 would have had a green painted fount (fuel tank). Have a look here for another example of a (500cp) 3470 1930s late AGM 3470
Why would someone do it up in a gold crome like finish it looks original like it's made that way could I have a special edition? I can take closer pictures.
Hi and welcome ! Thank you for sharing these nice lamps and lanterns I love the shade on your Aladdin.. that would look great lit up Regards
Welcome to the forum @RESTINGELF A fine collection you're having there. Are you planning to light them up / use them or shelf them for display purposes only?
I'm planning on keeping them and to who ever said the bottom should have been green on the coleman was right it was I can see spots where green is just barely showing but what did they do to make it goldfish crome like that? And should I have it restored or leave it alone? God I hope I find more of these hidden. Squralled away so far I he left me rare guns, lanterns, and co-co clocks and other kind of wind up clocks and watchs witch now I wanna keep them too. I'm just gonna sell All the BS he has and scrap all these old VW parts from the 80s there all rusted away anyways and I have enough there to make money to fix up up our old house I grew up in and maybe sell it or rent it out I'm not sure yet lol..
Also thank you Julian Whittaker I think they will too specially at my age my friends are already like your crazy you don't need that stuff lol sorry all your parents left you was $$$$ all I got left was a house 2 cars and what ever I could find in the house. Witch I think it's better honestly we'll in a way I guess helps me think on my toes a little bit better
Paul m why would someone strip the green paint and why would you paint brass is it for camouflage since you don't want something shiny in a battlefield? It kinda weird cause on one point it's a light so that would give your location but I can see if you able to shut it off fast enough you don't wanna also be shiny when they put there lights on you lol
Welcome to CPL. A nice reminder of your father. If it's only dust on the lanterns, a gentle wipe with a soft cloth will remove it. Otherwise clean with soap and water. The fount on the 3470 is made of brass. The green paint has been removed and the brass polished. It might have a clear coat applied to stop the polished surface tarnishing.
Some people like the look of polished brass. Brass will tarnish when left untreated so manufacturers either painted or nickel plated the tank. The 3470 is not Coleman. The glass may be marked Coleman but the lantern is an A.G.M. made by the American Gas Machine Company of Albert Lea, Minnesota.
The nickel platings on the Petromax 829, Optimus 200P and Coleman 242 are still in decent condition. Some gentle cleaning would do well. You can still lightly buff them with fine polishes to further bring out their shine but that's not absolutely necessary. The more you buff or polish them, the thinner the nickel becomes. The AGM 3470 was originally painted green. Over the years of use, some of the paint might have peeled, scratched off or been abraded away. Spillage of fuel on older paints might have caused some very unsightly blotches and further peeling on the fount. Paints, in general, are not as adherent on brass surfaces as well as they do on steel. Older paints are not completely resistant to some fuels and solvents. Your dad or some previous owner might have removed the deteriorated paint to make the lantern look better. Afterall, some fresh, mirror-finished bare brass would look almost like precious gold.
Well I know my dad didn't do it and I think I also found the wic to the AGM tell me if this is it. But why is it so big??? And someone I think broke the glass to the AGM and stuck a newer coleman glass in it cause it says coleman on the gas and when I saw glass made in China I almost wanted to take it out a quick as possible and bust it myself hate these new Chinese made things there so cheap.. and it makes me so so so mad that we get the Chinese people to make this stuff this cheap... 100 years ago if you bought something made in China you knew you were getting nice quality stuff cause just like the Japanese they were and gor the most part are still a real proud people. To me there's a reason people call old plates and cups and stuff like that Fine China... I hope one day a group of rich Chinese people get together and say enough is enough and start to make amazing Chinese products. Specially now how everyone is wants to go green and try to save our planet for the next generations to come. Lol enough me ranting here's close ups of what I found on it guys and thank you so much for the information it's made really appreciate these so much now!!!! Also I don't understand if it's really brass cause the bottom is silver and that's a picture of where some green paint was left over also what's my chances of find original glass for this AMG every other lamp I have has the original glass this ones doesn't and it's kinda messing with my idea of having it as original as possible since it's still in such nice condition without dents and scratches and stuff. And will it hurt the value if I can find someone to restore the original green on the bottom of it and I want the green with the writing saying it's a gas pressure lamp.
The basement is not cleaned or gone through so the glass to it might be there in another box maybe my dad put that glass in it to keep something on it and to make sure the glass don't get broken I found a box full of glass in bubble wrap but it's for indoor use lamps for the middle where they have that curve to them like my Aladin one. Also maybe there is more lamps hidden away I'll definitely keep you guys updated as I'm finding more of them. I just found a huge bag of target ducks and I know thos are also collected by people. It's almost like he collected alot of cool things I have like 20 Fountain pins. I been using one of them to practice my cursive cause they stopped teaching it to us in school. You can thank the devices we're looking at right now for it!!! Lol
Well you have found a wick for a kerosene non pressure oil lamp. The AGM needs a mantle. Like in: gas mantle.
What uses such a big dumb wick like that. It was in the box that I pulled the AMG out of so I thought it belongs to it.
Howdy Restimgelf. First off take a deep breath and calm down. Also Idk what you have but those old vw parts might surprise you what their worth. As to the lanterns. Watch this series of three videos to get an understanding of how these lanterns work. Here's the first one.
Hey buddy, have you watched the videos yet? If so I hope you have a better understanding of these things. I suggest as you sort the things out that you sort into groupings of known items and unknown items as you run across them. Then research the unknown stuff. Once you know what you have you can do the hard sorting of what to keep, what to give to family, what to sell or donate and what to trash. Look your trash over carefully. Some of my best finds have come from the scrap yard.
