Akron 132-S-42 produced for the US Military, with box. This lantern has been in storage for many years and looks not to be unlit. It came without glass, the globe shown is a replacement with no markings: Base of Fount - Stamped 'US' and shows very little use: Lighting instructions on collar: Always wondered if the Model No. is 132-5-42 or 132-S-42. I read it as an 'S' Steel burner unit stamped '911' with ceramic burner ends. A pair of mantle came in the box: Comparison: Akron 132-S-42 on the left. Akron 132-42 on the right:
@george I suspect that clumsy soldiers back in the day and the passage of time could be contributing factors to a lack of original glass. I'd be very interested to know what style of globe/glass were originally fitted, and the markings of such glass. The 132-42 seems to have a Coleman Top half, so may be Coleman glass of the period?
@Alex Smith Alex, a lot of them seem to either have nothing printed on them or "US Pyrex". I have seen one or two marked with Coleman but only in the Coleman models.
Thank you @george most informative and makes perfect sense. I'll keep it with the unmarked glass from American Mantles, although modern glass, it seems fitting for the period.
That looks like a very good condition lamp. re: missing glass I guess complete lamps in army stores could be "cannibalised" for replacement parts Chris
I have a soft spot for these, not so common and I've had to do some learning to get to know them. The first one (on the right in the photo) was advertised as a Coleman, but turned out to be a Akron, @AussiePete steered me in the right direction when he asked "Is the base of the fount stamped US? If so, it is one of these". Been tracking them down since!
@Alex Smith You have another great find. Thanks so much for sharing this lantern with us. @george is correct about the glass being either unmarked or marked US Pyrex. Alex if you want to try something different by using quadrant glass panes it will add some flare but of course it isn't original. You would need 4 glass panes and 4 globe channels. It's just a thought. Cheers, Norman
Nice find Alex Found a similar model here in Canada today . steel fount, ceramic burners. Came with a Coleman mil spec ventilator ( probably swapped in the field at some point) the tag is very hard to read I will try to figure out maybe there is a model number on it. Agostino
