Hello all with all this madness on the prices of Tilley lamps going up and up and it's not just Tilley lamps all lamps seem to be going this way. Is there still bargains out there? My answer is yes, it's just a matter of looking around and sometimes just driving into country towns, or even just plain dumb luck. Also I try to stay away from evilbay unless it's a buy it now for a bargain price. I do understand that in some countries that's almost impossible to do as Tilley lamps are few and far between in other words rare to find. Sometimes you have no choice when you want a rare lamp in your collection you either have to pay the price or let it go. So this is what I got for my $50 bucks. Now I'm sure some of the longer term collector's would say they payed alot less for their TL136, but that was then this is now. I would be interested in knowing what is the cheapest price you have played for a Tilley TL136? Yes she has one dint, not bad for her age. Thanks for looking.
1st - 2015 April $11.00 (Missing pump, globe and gallery [had burner though]) 2nd - 2015 May $25.00 Complete
I've had three. 16.50 GBP without a gallery or glass 10.00 GBP pork pie - no glass and 10.00 GBP pork pie with both 182 glass and an opal shade Too mean to pay more!
Bargains are rare these days and since the auction house closed, lamps have been in short supply here in Shetland.
@Buckaroo I also picked up a pork pie X246 in good nick last Christmas but for $55. However, mine is variation 3 and yours is variation 1 or 2 so I think I did quite well and you did exceptionally well. Iain
No. I was carrying one spare new one and the old one was more yellow and chipped a fair bit. @Buckaroo
If we say one $ for one £ then I could just about get my tilley SDR in the group ,i bought as part of a joblot. If we are converting the currency that would give us if we round it up just about £30 +/- then I could get loads in in this bracket . The cheapest Tilley I bought was 99p from the bay . My pl53 was £20 I think it more pigeon than brass when I received it and that also came with a gaurdsman with just as much pigeon on it . Then I have a few Coleman mostly under £30 and a few anchors and petclones all under £30 the best price was 99p but that was scrapped out for parts ,then there was one I got £13, only been used a couple of times by a couple of brothers when fishing ,it got put back in the box and forgotten about for about 25 years . The bargains are out there you've just to keep looking and willing to put a little work into getting them working properly .
In 20 years from now, £200 for an old original Tilley or other genuine make, will seem like a bargain, just like we think £20 is today. Old pressure lanterns and oil lamps are transitioning from vintage to antique items and becoming more collectible. The internet in the last 20 years has caused the hobby to spread massively and the numbers of new collectors going up, driving prices up. I’m sure they are good investment material, if you have space to keep a ‘few’ at home!
Nice find! I found a 77 200a Coleman in a second hand shop in York WA last year with no globe for 20, and a solar petromax clone with the box for 50 the other week, but generally I pay through the nose. Other than that 50 bucks might get you a packet of smokes
Hello all, I hope this doesn't sound rude, but I think some people didn't understand my question, and thanks for the other bargains price lamps but my question was.
@Mackburner So that's about $5.40 AUD, 57years ago, so I think I did get a real bargain then, basically $0.78 cents per year. I'm sure yours was in excellent condition compared to mine though. Do you still have the lamp?
Yes I still have 3 the first 5 lamps I ever found. The first three were FL6 lamps which were about to be scrapped by the storekeeper where I worked so they were free. Two of those got traded out though eventually. Then a year or so later I "Borrowed" a PL53 from the storekeeper at another depot. So the TL 136 was the first I paid actual cash for. ::Neil::
If we are showing off, I paid £3 for a Tilley Jacobean (cup and stand only) and £5 each for my 1st and 2nd models Tilley SDR.
Oh blimey! And I thought £30 for an sdr was good going ! @Buggerlugs .. I think I found a good tank for the tl136 for around £20 ?
Hello all, here is an update its eight months later and we have finally had some good painting weather and finished this Tilley TL136 table lamp, just add some paint, polish, many hours of work and of course some love, here is what she looks like as of yesterday. Thanks.
