Well I'm back with more questions!! First off by looking thru previous postings I found out that the Tilley I acquired about 6 years ago is a 246? dated 878 (the number on the bottom). After changing all the washers, generator and whatever moving part, it does not burn as bright as I think it should. Totally annoying! Then I read that Neil says that they are made cheaper than previous ones, so they do not perform as well. Now I know. It was a fun project anyway, and I learned something about Tilleys. On my shelf among my Coleman lanterns, I have this 958XA that I bought from a fellow in Canada back in 1998 or 1999 for two reasons: I thought it was a handsome lantern, and it has an owl on the side! Thought that the owl was really neat!!! It has a tag on it that has the number 2253 on it. I have no idea what this means or how old it is as the 958XA is the only thing on the bottom. So is this a good lantern?? Is it rare? is it special, or just a run of the mill Tilley. Also will the Service Pack SP1 washers and gaskets fit in this, just like the 246?. This will be my next "Kerosene Project", but I have to make some more bullets first. Thank you for your help, Don

Hello Don, yes, it's a Tilley X-246 Guardsman lantern and it should restore well enough. They are a good lantern, but the tanks were better before 1957, Tilley changed the tank design in that year. That service pack of washers will be fine, but if you require new washers, then it's better to buy them from Ross on this website, I shall add that link shortly, Jeff. Nice lantern Don! I just want to jump in and endorse Ross' washers/gasket kits as being an excellent value. It's difficult to get Tilley parts here in the States, but he does a stellar job of creating and posting the gasket kits. You would do well to get the deluxe version with the replacement pump leather in it. Al
