Hi fellas I’m sharing my mica globe I made for my Tilley AL15. Based on the diameter of the 182 Tilley globe. I cut strips of metal shim to size of the circumference of the globe 310mm long the mica was cut down to 100mm. I marked out where the air tube are to go and spacing for joining. I have made a basic sheet metal bender I folded my strips in halves. I basically put it together to see how it looks. I’m happy with it. I make my own split pins that work very well once secured and tapped flat. I rolled the globe shape in a combination roller bender and cutter makes a better round globe. I used a hole punch to cut the bigger air tubes holes, pre drill split pin hole with 1.5mm drill. a bit of pre fitting And some more assembly and fixing. And here is my finished globe,
Great job! I really fancy making my own chimney but the mica I’ve found is really expensive. When I priced up the last one I needed, it was cheaper to have one shipped from the US.
Top job again, Darryl Would you be able to post a pic of the roller/cutter you mentioned at all, please? Sounds like a useful bit of kit? Many thanks
Wow that is amazing, so are you going into the mica globe business now? That is truly tremendous work.
Thank you for the compliments and encouragement, I taught myself how to go about making globes. The mica is costly, I couldn’t do it as a going concern. The fella on the Facebook lantern page seems to be going great guns and looks of a great quality of workmanship
