This is a Primus No. 1051 gasoline lantern made in 1933 (X). Its nickel plating is in average condition, but the blue enamel hood is in pretty good shape. It came with a Coleman R55 generator that has been re-fitted to the lantern. The lantern was services by TW Sands (Melbourne, Australia) in 1997. The R55 generator may have been fitted then, or earlier. There was no glass with the lantern. I'll have to get a mica one made. NOTE: In some photos the original filler cap has been replaced with a "Amish" pump cap. "SV Patent/Primus Sweden/No. 60503" The collar was repainted with "aluminium" car enamel. The correct Primus filler cap. "Benzine/Naphtha/Petrol/Benzoline" "Patent S.O.KT" Testing Up and running The final running mantles. As it came TW Sands service mark. A great lantern! Cheers Tony
Very good job Tony. I'm quite envious of the condition of that hood. I'm surprised there is no stamping on the filler cap. I'll have to check mine when I get home. It certainly looks original. Another very minor comment. I would align the cleaning shaft of the generator with the fuel valve. That way it is easier to use the wire to turn the cleaning arm.
Nils, Blue hood: I apologise for putting so many photos of the hood in the post. . In reality, I was very suprised myself. There is some rust, but not what you'd expect for a used lantern this old. I've a younger Primus No. 991 that has a hood in much worse condition. Filler cap: I had better check that there is not a Primus-stamped filler cap on my bench! I do remeber checking if the Coleman and Primus caps were compatible. I may have swapped them and not noticed. Generator alignment: Thanks for the advice. In all honesty I've not needed to use the long arm of the pricker mechanism as there is not globe (yet). Cheers Tony
Great find and top job on the fettle. A beautiful lamp and I too have blue hood envy. You are also lucky with the condition of the plating on the tank as it seems to 'fall off' on these lamps. Very well documented fettle and great reference material. I agree with Nils on the cap writing, I have just checked 3 1050 / 1051 caps and they all had writing on. Great stuff James
@Nils Stephenson & @James K Aha! On my workbench, carefully disguised as a Primus filler cap, was the correct Primus filler cap! Correct Primus filler cap for my Primus No.1051: Primus filler cap next to a Coleman cap: Cheers Tony
It does look very splendid indeed in the blue. Never seen one in the flesh. Well documented and presented as usual Tony. Just gotta get me one now...
