I'm at work so nowhere near my lamps and quickly looking to get a syringe with a blunt stainless needle for filling the spirit cup on my lanterns, that plastic spirit bottle is a waste of time and just ends up spilling meths / IPA all over the side of the lamp!, to get the spout into the spirit cup, you have to uncover the vent and tip the bottle, which results in spirit gushing out of the breather hole which is now facing the lantern!.

A measured dose of spirit from a syringe is definitely the way forward.

But how much is needed to fill just the right amount? then I know what size syringe to buy.

    Thanks

If I look here: PETROMAX NUMBERS
    It say 7cc.
I have never measured it. The "original" spirit cans have a fixed dose so I wonder why yours is spilling alcohol.

    Thanks WimVe.
Maybe I'm not using it correctly!. I don't much like the design anyway as it is always open (Vented) so cant throw it into a bag so I'm going to get a closable metal fuel bottle which I will just suck up the correct amount of fuel needed to light the lamp, this will also help when it gets dark as I wont be able to see the spirit level in the cup very well.

I use a syringe and needle for a couple of lamps with almost impossible to reach spirit cups. I use 5ml for a pre heat.

I've been using a washing-up liquid bottle with this shaped 5mm copper tube stuck in the cap for years. Using another cap for transporting means no leaks if the bottle falls over. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't give a fixed dose so some light is required.

I guess mine being a Chinese knock off probably has no seal at position 8 of your patent attachment as it will continue to empty all the contents of the bottle out through the spout, also there is no hole 15, just 14.

Think it says it all, the copy I got is not a copy just a poor imitation, the molding is poor as well with flashing around the mold joins which has not even been bothered to be cleaned up.

Plus filling it results in spilt spirit. Syringe with blunt end long needle and a screw top fuel bottle for me to draw from as needed.

I think I’ve had a couple of the cheaper syringes and blunt needles off the bay.. the seal won’t last forever as it’s not made for meths but you may be able to get a viton O ring that would fit or fashion something yourself
It really doesn’t like paraffin

I like the look of Henry’s gadget.. was that the brand that is so kind to your hands??

I would say, buy and use whatever you like.
Personally I like the old original style solutions. If you take the time to look around on the bay of evel you find them of many Brands. In plastic, in metal, marked or blanco.
Even the somewhat rarer AIDA red versions can be found.
Or the full metal Swedish versions.

That's a newly made one, which, that I believe, you can order from the manufacturer (another lamp enthusiast), who posts in one of the German forums...

5ml of bio ethanol from a syringe seems to do the trick.
