Hello all, as most of you know I only collect Tilley and Kayen lamps. So from time to time I've ended up with Coleman out door lamps in deals and given them all to Michael. Now to this story I've been watching this lamp for over a 5 year period and thinking wow $500 AUD is way out of my price range, so every now and then I would pop into this shop and the price would drop $50 here and $100 there, until the price was almost at a price that I could afford or would pay, so I said to the owner how long do you think you have had this lamp sitting here and they said maybe 6 years or so. Well then I said would you take this much and they said yes, so of course I bought it not knowing anything about this lamp, you could say I took a punt why not as I fell in love with its design. Now this is what I've have found out so far and please add any information that is missing so I can put her in the reference gallery, I found this information out from two other members, some information I found on this Forum as well. 1: Its a Coleman quick lite CQ table lamp and is from May 1927 2:The lamp shade is an Aladdin lamp shade from a wick lamp. 3:The insect screen are hard to come by and this one I'm told is in excellent condition. 4:These lamps run on Shellite and mentholated sprits in the preheater cup that will make it light without flaring up. 5:It needs a pump to put pressure into the fount, as yet I'm unsure about the procedure, I only have a pump from a Coleman iron, will this work? 6:Im also told a payed a fare price which is great news. So here are some photos as found, please add any information that is missing thanks. Also never say never on this site. Either way she will say in my collection now.
Nice acquisition. Any pump that has a nozzle that closely fits such as the Coleman iron ones should work. The insect guard is in good order and they are not that common now a days with these lamps in Australia.
Oh, I don’t know … Seriously, a grand acquisition and well done you for your patience and tenacity in acquiring it. The gap between the circumference of the screen and the lower rim of the Aladdin shade suggests a shade with a diameter to suit that of the shade would be right. The Coleman iron pump will surely serve. Technique is to unscrew the air valve in the filler cap a fraction, pump air in and re-tighten the valve. John
You've got yourself a beauty there Brian! Don't know what you paid for it but my guess is you bagged a bargain... well done. It's got a preheater cup which could imply its running on kero but equally a previous owner might not have been too keen on the 'interesting' (terrifying!) start-ups you sometimes get with Colman Fuel or naptha equivalents. Can't wait to see it working!
This instruction leaflet could help some. Looks in great condition but at some time the control wheel has been replaced as the original would have been a fibre type. Also it's been fitted with an R55 generator which is a replacement for the original Q99 type. Most likely changes made by Sands I guess. Not wrong though just honest servicing. ::Neil::
The writing on the base where it says TWS on the first line, probably a work or reference number on the second line and a date on the third line. The date looks like 29-12-8?
That is a nice lamp Brian and who could blame you for falling for it.. just goes to show good things come to those who wait
@Buggerlugs If you look at the bottom again you might be able to figure out the date precisely that TW Sands serviced that lamp: “TWS. R34/1?? 29-12-8?” Tony
Oh I see it, it says TWS R34/100 29-12-84. Now it all makes sense Michael and I wondered what that might mean, that shows how smart we are. Now that it's been mentioned I feel like a fool especially about the TWS part, as I would go to the shop I'm Melbourne when I was a teenager I think the shop was in Exhibition street at that time.. All's I can say is it must have been all the excitement and we didn't put two and two together. So is the R34/100 a reference number then?
@Tony Press Thanks mate I'm glad its got you intrigued otherwise we might never know, at least we have a change with you on the case.
Maybe the preheat cup was added as the R55 generator with its onboard pricker does not have the loop to heat with the pair of matches mentioned in the manual ? Super Nice lamp !
@Buggerlugs any dimples in the air tube? I have seen p-cups in gasoline lamps up north in Canada, that helped a lot in freezing weather
Hello all, thank for all the information and comments she is now in the Reference Gallery. You my notice she has a new shade that just popped out of nowhere. Coleman CQ May 1927 (USA) Thanks again.
@Pancholoco1911 Here are some photos to look at as I dont know what I'm looking for thanks, the first one has the patent number on it partly covered by the preheater cup.
