Picked up a couple nice ones today, for my first foray into the early lantern market. I am solid on the 50's and up stuff, but figured I would give a go at some classics. I started with the L427, and I think someone tried kerosene in it at some point based on the smell and what was left in the fount. I can tell there is some rust and crud in there, and the take up tube is pretty clogged as well. I am struggling to get the pump removed. I have an adjustable wrench that fits nicely, even though I don't want to use it. I have tried penetrating oil for hours, and still no go.

Is heat safe to use to help a bit? Does anyone have any suggestions? Once I get this all sorted I will start on the Slant. That fount is in amazing shape internally. Both Mica chimneys are complete, with just a bit of rust. The vent on the 220 is actually the vent for the 427, and the one on the 427 is a mystery. Looks like the coleman, but the vent holes are a bit different, and there is no embossed logo. Fill caps and top nuts are also replaced, but other than that I think I got lucky with a couple solid lanterns.

Thanks again in advance, and I look forward to any tips or tricks with these classics.

I use a socket I extended and an electric impact for removing those external 427 pumps.

Thanks. So just to confirm, it’s essentially a very very deep well socket?

Correct, sorry I don't recall the size. I can look tomorrow. I've seen others buy an extra deep socket, but I'm usually in a hurry and just made my own.

Have you also thought about using a Plier Wrench? Those from Knipex are very good and available in different sizes. I have been using them for some time now with good success, even with completely worn out hex nuts etc.

Got it apart yesterday after placing it in a jig I made with my workmate table to hold the fount steady. Some serious varnishing on the base, and the bottom of the tank was rusted a bit. Currently in a apple cider vinegar soak, so we will see what happens. More pics and questions to come I am sure.

I pulled them from a small antique dealer at a shop in town where I live. First 2 of this vintage I have ever seen in person, and I have been to many swap meets, flea markets, and estate sales in my life. Usually all I see is green when I find old Colemans, but that is just fine with me when the price is right.

Best of luck in searching. I also have others out there that keep their eyes open for my interests, and I theirs.
