Hi all. Newbie on CPL. My name is Dan and I live in Minnesota (U.S.) I have been collecting Coleman lanterns for several years and know them pretty well. I came to CPL to learn more about some of the more "exotic" lantern manufacturers. Optimus, Tilley, Bialaddin, Aida, etc, etc.

I know enough to be dangerous at this point. I have never seen any of the lanterns I mention above in person, just pictures. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what would be a good "starter" lantern for someone like me. This would be just a user lantern for me in the backyard. Looking for something reliable and relatively easy to work on/find parts for. I like the look of the Aida, but I've heard bad things about their founts. I've heard good things about Hipolito but thought I'd ask for advice to get me on the right path.

In the meantime, if you have any Coleman related questions, odds are good I might be able to help!

    Thanks!

    Dan

    Welcome to the forum Dan.

If you're looking for something that's readily available with good parts availability, then the best way to go is a Petromax or one of the Petromax types. This includes Aida, Hipolito, Optimus, Santrax, Butterfly, etc, etc.

    Hi Dan,

    Welcome !
Luckily for you your exotic lamps ain't exotic overhere.
I have never heard bad stories about AIDA lamps. But maybe we should first classify what you are looking for: a new or old lantern. Old lanterns can have hidden cracks and obsolete parts.

Best user lanterns are: petromax, geniol and hipolito, 500cp, army versions. The "new" AIDA range 1250, 1350 and 1500 lamps.

I leave the other exotics to those who know more about them then I do.

Thanks very much for the great advice! I've been reading a little about Petromax and it sounds like quality can vary quite a bit depending on vintage. Just like Coleman in that respect. I'll keep an eye out for Aida and Hipolito. I'll keep you posted if I'm able to make any new acquisitions!

    Thanks all,

    Dan

Well; a very quick update for you all. I ended up securing an Aida Express 1500. As soon as I receive it, I'll post some pictures for all.

    That sounds good.
And then when you've finished up playing with that one, you might consider some real lanterns like Primus or Radius. ;)

Thanks again all. I'll add some pictures when I receive the lantern. It is hard to find these lanterns in the states and shipping from anywhere is EXPENSIVE. I don't see many of these lanterns for sale in my area, but I'll watch ebay for them. Thanks again and I'll be back in touch with pics.
