Just got this. Figuring things out as I think about them a bit. Globe arrived over a week ago, just need to add a torch I have already. Has spare vaporizers, mantles, reflector, funnel, meths jar, dipstick, paperwork. Imported to the USA by Thacker Duane
Kit has a CS56 stove and a X246 lantern. A cool added part is a bug screen that clips on the lantern vaporizer under the globe. Duane
I worked on the stove last night, pump is rebuilt, the pump cup had disintegrated, also soaked burner parts in hot vinegar for a few hours, the two pieces of brass screen had some sort of debris over spots, looked like the burner wasn't burning the best as there was some soot in a couple spots. May have to look at the parts chart to see order they back in, little more complicated than a bowlfire and my memory doesn't recall stuff. Duane
A very nice and complete kit. I like the way the funnel is located and am curious how firmly the spirit bottle is clipped in. Is it just located or does the 3 clips provide positive grip to retain the bottle in place? Does a Thacker sticker appear anywhere? The CS56 is one of the nicest Tilley stoves though the complexity of the burner arrangement surprises me. Some fettlers, including myself, have made CS56 clones and I do like the ones that utilise an existing X246 cage frame such as described HERE. Anyway the complete kit is a great acquisition; congratulations.
Thank you guys. The appliances have a A.W. Thacker sticker on the fount bottoms. The meths bottle is just located by clips is all. Both appliances have to be positioned just right so the reflector can set in its clips and the pumps don't rub or prevent the level sitting of them. I need to figure out the dipstick, which end is up. Busy today, so have not reassembled the stove yet. The lantern makes pressure, the stove of course had the ruined pump cup. Duane
Going this weekend with some Coleman guys. I believe the knob on the control cock unscrews, it leaks when turned down so need to replace a oring, been awhile since I have worked on any Tilley. Duane
The lantern was more cantankerous than the stove. Learned how to tie a Butterfly double tie to the burner, first one I figured out had no way to go over the vaporizer as I used a mantle with a single tie. Doh! Replaced washers with a kit from Ross. Ordered proper mantles I think. I think the bug screen goes on after the globe and sets at the bottom of the globe. Good learning. Valve leaks just a little, so will have to release pressure after use, which makes sense for the next use. Treated the fount interior with a lye solution overnight, rinsed some black dust out, it did look like it needed something. Duane PS: I need to check the clocking.
That Sportsman Kit set is really excellent. You bought 6 Butterfly double tie mantles from me years ago so check your mantle box , one might be kicking around . lol
I still have a few of the Butterfly mantles, use on my Inspection lamp. Can't mess them up on it, don't run it much. Duane
No, it goes below the glass as you have it now. Slide it up to the glass after lighting, the spring should be strong enough to hold it in place.
@Henry Plews Being the split insect guard, I thought it optionally could go on AFTER the globe and sit at the bottom of the globe.
It looks a great find and they both look to be working well too ! I only saw a Tilley stove recently in another member’s collection and hadn’t realised the stove cage was enamelled regards
Perhaps it's my sometimes mercurial mind, I was thinking going on after the glass would put it inside the glass which is of course incorrect.
