Can I use Tilley Leather Pump Caps in Coleman Lanterns to replace rubber ones, or are they different sizes. just thought I would ask the question as I have a few Tilley Leather Pump Caps but no Coleman. The Coleman Leather Pump Caps are so damn expensive. Cheers Kiwi
No they are too small. Tilley pump tubes are 16mm Dia and Coleman are 20mm. In fact most lamps such as Vapalux/Bialaddin, Primus, Optimus are about 17mm so they don't fit either. Best solution is to learn how to make your own leather washers. ::Neil::
Considering that it will probably last you 20+years of service, @ $3.25 USD a leather from Old Coleman Parts isn't really that expensive. Granted shipping to Oz will add to the price, it's still a bargain. If you are working with a large number of lanterns, I agree with Neil, it's worthwhile to gear up to make your own but for a one off just order one. Also take into account the value of your time. If I count my time as worth $10/hour (a bargain IMHO) the time it will take me to make a common Coleman pump leather is certainly more than the 20 minute cost. In 20 minutes I can have a lantern torn down and various parts in the electrolysis bath, ultrasonic soak, whatever, well on the way to rebuild. On reassembly the ease of just reaching into the parts box and grabbing a fresh leather, when needed, is well worth the price of the part. Why not poll the other Australian members and see if it's worth making a group buy from OCP for the common Coleman parts like leathers, packing and fuel cap gaskets then divvy them up over there. That would defray some of the shipping costs.
