    Hello all,

Was just wondering if anyone else has used the BC4/500 "Best Quality" Petromax-style 500cp lamp mantles from Base Camp UK? If so, what are your thoughts?

They seem to work for me but I feel like the light is incredibly yellow. However, as this was my first lamp and mantle, I have nothing to compare it to other than childhood memories of other (probably radioactive) mantles. So I am unsure whether it is the mantle that is yellow, or whether something is going wrong with my lamp.

The other mantles I have in my possession are:
    - Petromax branded mantles
    - Sea Anchor mantles.

I will be trying out the Sea Anchor next. Saving the Petromax original ones for last as they are not cheap!
However, I am also strongly considering this cheapo ones so keen to know thoughts if anyone has any other recommendations for cheap mantles: 20pcs Tie Gas Lantern Mantles Camping Light Mantle For Most Gas Lamps BIG SIZE | eBay

    Some good advice from Ian
Unless you can expertly tie your own fishing flies whilst blindfolded and with both hands tied behind your back avoid the cheap Chinese crap that you linked to. If they're anything like the smaller versions, the mantles themselves are even more fragile than most but it's the tie strings which I find to be the biggest pain, they must be all of 1.5 cms long, they easily fray and they're very slippery making it impossible to tie a tight knot.

Point taken - looking at the pictures there is barely any string on those ones. Reading deeper into the forums seems like one user reported small blow-outs in the mantle; think the risk of broken glass is higher as a result, so will stick to the safer options.

Anything new with petromax on it, is not original.

@Hamdhan777 , what do you mean by Petromax branded mantles? Old original ones or new ones?
I do like the old Heinze branded mantles which where sold in packages with the BW Px lanterns. They sometimes can be fund on ebay.
But you should know how (old) mantles are stored, they don't like moisture.

Colour can be in the eye of the beholder or simply more or less pressure.
If your fuel creates a nice blue flame, its not the fuel causing a "problem".

Sorry, I meant Petromax brand mantles- i.e. New production (probably china?). They were the ones I got with the service kit.

Will try them out one day and see how they do. I am curious.

I have no idea where these are made. What I do know is that good mantle making over the whole line is a difficult theme.
From hard mantles like Aladdin to soft ones.

We'll, I've got cheep Chinese mantles on all of my lanterns and sure, a few blow holes or split but I just pop a new one on. The green topped ones are very roughly equivalent to the larger Coleman type mantles and the pink topped ones are meant for smaller lanterns like the Coleman 200 for example. I've never damaged a globe on any of my 80 (approximately) lanterns. The pink ones are a pain to tie but wetting the cord or rubbing some wax on it works wonders.

Here's a link to some on AliExpress if anyone's interested.

For Tilley and Bialaddin type lanterns I use the ball type mantles and unpick the bottom seam. There's a thread on here somewhere that explains how it's done.
