Hello all I was wondering when Tilley stopped using this burner on the R1 Heater lamp?
    20220607_134345.jpg

Was this burner used with the GF control cock valve, fount?
Or just with the XN control cock valve, fount?
Do we roughly have a year?
Obviously it was before the 1950's.
If you have any ideas, much appreciated thanks.

I’ve had those on 1930s era radiators (XN control cocks).

Mine came with a GF control cock, not deep enough for a XN control cock.

My other R1 has the XN as well.

I was going over this about 3 nights ago looking at catalogues and newspaper ads.
I found a lot from 1938 to 1940 which surprised me.
    Even up to November 1944.
I am yet to go back to find the first of the square body burners.

    Found nothing.
Several ads showing the XN cock with the old burner but not GF between 1940 and 1945.
Old pictures in the ads again.
At this stage I can't put that burner over 1940.
Doesn't mean it did not happen.
    Still looking.

@Anthony @Tony Press So do you guys think I should leave this combination together as that is how she came?
Or should I change the burner over to the flat type?
Do you have any ideas? @JEFF JOHNSON

I’m a bit of a fan of “keep as found”. But if I found an older R1 without that burner, I’d probably use the burner on your present lamp on the older one.

    Cheers

That makes sense, keep it as is unless I find an older R1 Heater XN fount.
So in your opinion the burner doesn't belong with the GF fount?

    In my opinion…:-k.

It’s easy to have an opinion in the absence of facts, but here’s what I reckon:

    1. It could be original to the stove, if the GF cock and the later style burner were not released at the same time; or

    2. Even if they were released at the same time, it could have been an old stock burner with the new cock.

Is there any evidence of numbers stamped on the outer rim of the base of the tank?

I have yet to find any of those early burners, but if I did find a couple which were in decent working order, then I would fit them to my R2.

This is one I found a few years ago here in Aus (1935-40 Tilley R1) yours looks to be the same (the control cock may have been replaced at some time)

@Graham P Yours is a XN fount, mine is GF fount, which means a deep socket for the XN control cock valve.

Hello all I fixed the fount problem, here is the correct XN fount and control cock valve.
I haven't finished the reflector as yet, it's just the first cut but here is an up to date photo.

20220622_133806.jpg she's coming along just nicely.

Hello all, I'm one step closer, I have added a new ceramic tube as the old one was broken.
I also got myself a new mantle.
Now the hardest part to find the old style wire guard I believe they are the hardest part to find for these R1 Heaters, so I will be on the hunt for one fingers crossed.:)

    Sounds like good progress

have you considered having a go at making a guard, at all?

by the way, it’s hard to tell from the angle of the photos, but the burner head seems a long way from the reflector? I know that handles can take a knock and alter the geometry??

@podbros no a wire guard will find its way to me.
Also its just the angle of the photo it's the same as all my other R1 Heaters.
It seems I forgot to upload the latest photo silly bugger.:-k
