This is my nice Solex 200C -Italian made. But I'm a little bemused... I don't have a glass for it, and they're probably unobtainium. But even if I could find one, how could a glass slide down past those 2 small studs sticking out. (The studs are the hangers for the handle). Do you think someone has converted it, fitting the studs instead of bolts/screws? (They're very tight but I could remove them).
Looking at it further, as far as I can see, a glass would have to be slim enough to fit down INSIDE those vertical support rods. It looks like there is a 'ledge' locator in the pressing at the base. There you go, I solved my own query. Anyone got a spare glass?
Hi Tony, my Solex 200 is the same as yours but not with the studs like that i do not recall, the glass from a 250cp Baby Petromax will fit, i have both these Lanterns and they interchange glass size
Hi Julian, Yes, I think you should be able to remove the burner assembly.. sometimes they are tight in the top of the cage. Hope you can get it working ok regards
Size Tony, as close as I can get it: 3 5/8" OD (could be a shade less) x 4" long (could be a shade more). (Apologies for the Imperial but my metric rulers are out in the freezing workshop!!)
Outback boy, Any chance you could post a pic of your Solex (with glass)? It would be good to compare with mine. And do you have one Tony?
Hi Julan, yes i will do that first thing in the morning, do not know if Tony has one Julian, earlier i got you mixed up thinking it was Tony who posted about the Solex, Frank
I have a 200c here glass measures 90 O/D x 102 long looks to be same as (Austramax 300 + Coleman 249 straight side globes.& petromax baby
Julian, here is mine with a mica globe and a glass, the measurements, DIAM 3 1/2'' X 4 1/4'' The mica one has all the mica a couple of panels are a bit creased, but it is yours free if you want, just pay freight
You'd need to measure it, but I bought a lantern globe from a seller on AliExpress called Thous Winds and that's not a typo. It needed one for my recently fettled Solar 200. In the end I didn't need it as there was one with the donor lantern I was donated but it might fit your Solex 200. The glass is a reasonable thickness and will also fit in a Coleman 249. Oooh I think I have problems other than the glass! :-0 I just flung on a Coleman mantle which interestingly has a very fine weave. I'll pull the burner apart and give it a good clean and try a more conventional mantle. It's interesting mister boy... your lamp appears to be all brass by the look of it. I think mine is brass underneath the chrome (but I'm not game to scrape it yet to find out).
Well I've just spoken to Gerry at Austramax, and they have a glass which will fit - 90mm dia by 105mm h. Actually the same dimensions as the standard Austramax glass but straight -without the 'bell' shape. (Good tip Graham). Good, now, to solve that evil flambe!!!
The price is strange considering China is a lot closer to Australia! The fancy ones get very expensive but if you dig around, their straight ones are much cheaper.
World is FULL of strange prices mate, especially anything coming out of America... the postage prices make you weep. Some stuff for classic bikes, goes from China to America, then England... only then Australia! (It's called capitalism and it means that any greedy bug*er who can add himself in as a middleman, can cream off his percentage before it gets to you.) I was recently Quoted about A$200 for a carburettor, from England. I find I can get one the same one for A$35 from cheatiebay or amaizun. Look at the figs again: $200 vs $35.
Hi! That dimensions are standard for Optimus 200 and those are many on the market. Those flame say to me more heat or a carburettor full of carbon deposits. Cheers, Francisc
@Julian Whittaker Why waste a good mantle ? You can't get much more conventional than a Coleman mantle. If you preheated the lantern correctly, those flames indicate a loose or worn jet or the air gap is too small. Air gap should be in the region of 11 or 12mm. ? ? ? Try a magnet, if it sticks it's steel, if it doesn't it's brass.
Yes good advice thanks Henry. I did a thorough exterior clean, but I might make today's project to pull it apart and clean inside. Air gap (looks to be about 8m but I haven't measured it - (I assume you mean the gap between the vertical pipe and the inverted U-tube up top) Possible worn jet? hoping a clean and check will fix it. Yes, Magnet, -Duuurgh! Yes it's brass. The Coleman mantle I used has a very fine weave, I have a selection of various mantles various brands and they are all coarser, I wondered if that could be inhibiting a good burn. Maybe it's why it cost me nothing, prev owner had trouble with it. It it viable to do a basic test without fitting a mantle? (prolly a silly Q!)
Hello Julian, The burn shown in your previous picture does not indicate a mantle problem. It was either just burning too rich or the fuel wasn't properly vaporized. It would be best to correct the issue first and test the lantern without fitting a mantle. To perform this test, use a much lower pressure than usual and preferably with the glass globe in place.
Thanks Myn, I'll do that. Our local Austramax (Melbourne) can supply a glass globe so I'll get one of those first. I have about another half-dozen misbehaving lamps to do too!
@Julian Whittaker As your Solex works on the same principal as a Petromax lantern, this link will prove usefull. https://classicpressurelamps.com/attachments/px-rest-pdf.57117/
