Hey there! New member here. My name is Iñigo and I am from Spain. I just adquired a Petromax 829 500 for a good price as the previous owner kept it as decoration and it is not working. No doubt it's been sitting for a while. The leather pump cap is gone and the screw from the manometer is missing. Looks like someone tried to remove the chrome/galva/zinc/whatever it is in order to make it look oldish, it almost wiped some letters out. I am the owner of a couple old petrol stoves but this is my first lantern. I'll be glad to bring it to me alongside my old rebuilt Peugeot j5 van that I just finished after one year and a half of hard work. My goal is to remove whatever chrome is left, polish it and replace what is needed, dismantle and refit everything, plus paint the handle and maybe the cap. I am concern that new repair kits might not be compatible with older Petromax versions. This one is supposed to be from 1968 (3383 digits under the tank). Also looks like the upper pump stem part is missing a little piece of metal. Just wondering if the damage is too serious or not as I would like to keep it as original as possible. Cheers.
Welcome, Looks like the lantern is used and that is where it is made for ;-) I wonder why you want to paint parts of it, especially if you want to use the lantern with your stoves. new parts should fit so that is not a problem. Try to buy old new parts and not new "china" made.
Hello and welcome, if you mean that in the last picture, there is nothing missing. That is a cut out to unlock the part at the cap of the pump channel by turning it in the right position (locking works turning the overhanging rest of this part in right position). Regards, Steven
Welcome to CPL @jentilak It's a good lantern and should clean up nicely This post has a link to hytta.de and the seal kit. Petromax 828/350 super
The original plating was nickel, not chrome, zinc or anything else. Sometimes, the nickel had been worn off over many years of use and polishing/cleaning. But sometimes, they had been deliberately removed by people who preferred bare brass for whatever reasons. Its a fine old lantern. It shouldn't be too difficult to restore it to operating conditions if there are no leaks on the fount.
Thanks to you all for wellcoming and helping me. I am happy I have my first lamp. I'd read on these boards it was a great lantern so I am glad I got my hands on this one. No doubt it will need some love to light again. I will paint the handle for sure as it is rusty and I will polish both the tank and the hood as they have been sandpapered and it is fully scratched (even though you can't see it in the pics). I removed eveything yesterday and I am having a look at it now. I am quite impressed by how easy and fast to remove parts are, I love it, simple engineering. I am currently checking the official website so I can properly name parts haha. The preheater nozzle as well as the preheater body were blocked but I managed to clean the body using white vinagar and a compresor, not the case of the nozzle which is still blocked. The pump piston rod is slightly bent, I will try to straighten using two metal blocks and a hammer. Same with the carburetor rod, but this guy is far too bent so I'll buy a new rod anyway as I don't want to wait till I get a new one in case it doesn't work. There is some solid stuff inside the tank that I want to clean as well, and I broke the needle trying to clean the preheater nozzle so I'll have to buy a new one. Honestly, I was about to buy the complete kit from the official website before you said anything (it is on ebay as well for 26e), but I'll check the one from the thread Robb said. Any kind of suggestion/advice is wellcomed.
Hi Inigo and welcome! Good luck with the restoration they are very well made and the older ones even more so, Regards pb
Hi Inigo, nice lantern you have there. Nice photos of disassembled parts. Your English is very good by the way, Alex
