I haven’t bought much for a while but I couldn’t say no to these two in a local junk shop. I didn’t even have to haggle - the guy just kept lowering the price while I looked at them!

Both very new to me - I think I have a Tilley TL106 (second) and a Kayen AP2?

    Tilley is 21” tall

Kayen has two holes in the pump (not four like a Tilley?)

    Nice find, Buckaroo
Yes, it is a Kayen AP2 and looks in very good condition.

Hex nuts on the bale studs (Tilley are round) and the speckled hood.

Another point is that is from Kopsen's Sydney manufacture as it has the wide base rim (20mm). Nettlefolds Melbourne are 16mm

Kayen have two holes for the pump. Note the shade. It will have spot welds on the keeper wings. Tilley has small rivets , control cock has a brass knob. The vaporiser will have cross knerled not parallel. I do like Kayen lamps

Here’s the first light up for the Tilley. I assumed the cock was not removable, but given there’s a leak and I’ve now seen some lanterns in the reference gallery with the cock removed - I’m assuming there’s a thread somewhere. I’ll wait for it to cool down and then try to remove it.

That means if I’m about to do something I shouldn’t, you’ve about 15mins to stop me

It’s now running well! I do like these old lamps…

Not too keen on the peerless double tie mantles tho. A little large and thick

    Here you go @Buggerlugs !

I had some issues with it losing pressure. At first it took a few taps with a hammer to correctly seal the pip in the pump tube - that fixed the pump pushing back with pressure. But then some kero started bubbling out the pump tube, without it pushing the pump back up, and there’s some solder at the base of the pump tube (see pic) so I’m unsure if it’s been repaired at some stage.

A replacement tube from an X246 has done the trick so far.

Nice job also I've seen plenty of pumps like that it's not that uncommon to see.

This is most likely the seal on the pump-to-tank. I had this same issue last week, and then remembered I’d been through this before. Some pumps accept the Viton washer better than others, and there are slight differences in diameter and thickness. A tiny little bit of Vaseline or copper grease on the washer when fitting helps.

Thanks Tony I did know this as I have spare pump valves and sometimes I have the same problems, so I just change them around or even change the spring until it works. I never thought of using Vaseline or copper grease though, thanks for that one.

@Tony Press and @Buckaroo I also noticed that the pumps are slightly different, besides the colour difference and the length which is the same the TL106 pump has no grove around the bottom of the pump, thread depth is different, the knurling and the pump valves lengths, I'm sure there are more differences as well.
The X246 does have the grove around the bottom of the pump, I dont think this matters its just different as I know there are lots of variations in Tilley pump styles.
I am only mentioning this as I saw the pump in question above.
    Here are the photos.
The left pump is the X246 and right of course is the TL106 pump, which does have the solder on the pump and works just fine.

Thanks Tony, having replaced the seal I didn’t even think this could have been an issue. Will play around with it and see. I know it’s just the pump tube but I do like to keep things all original where possible
