hey guys i got my first pressure lamp the tilley storm lamp x246b it doesnt have a mantle on it but i tryed the lighting process to see if it worked. I filled it with 1 and a half pints of paraffin i lit the preheater torch and left it for a minute while it was warming i pumped it 7 times then i turned the knob on and it lit but it kept making popping noises then went out, there was also little bubbles of paraffin coming out between the vaporizer and control cock. I tryed the whole process again and same thing happened. Any advice guys? thanks for your time. steven
Hi Steven, The problem you are describing is caused by the lamp losing pressure due to one or more leaks. If the lamp has been in storage for some time the rubber washers can deteriorate and will probably need replacing. Our forum founder Ross sells reasonably priced washer kits [url=http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/ In the meantime, drain the fuel from the lamp, pump some pressure into it and then submerge the lower part of the lamp in a bucket of water (do not get the mantle wet). Check for bubbles and you will see where the leaks are. I would also try giving it a few more pumps to get it going once you have dealt with the leaks. Regards, James.
First of all you need to fix that leak under the vaporiser! It's no good idea to have fuel seeping out there. Hopefully it just needs tightening. Otherwise you will need a new seal. One minute is too little time to preheat it. You shall atleast let the (fully soaked) torch almost burn out of its own before you give it a go to light the lantern. And seven strokes might also be a bit too skimpy. Atleast once you have the lamp lit, you need to pump much more.
Ouch! We crossed, James. Anyway. James suggestion to check for other leaks than the one under the vaporiser is a good idea, so go for it.
thanks very much guys yea after looking at the seal it worn away on one side. cant wait to get it lit properly but a bit more time making sure everything is working correctly will only help the overall experience. thanks again guys
You do realise that this will just be the first of many Tilley lamps that you will buy? After you buy the first one you're hooked!
Hi Steven and welcome. Jean is absolutely right; now you have one lamp there will certainly be lots more! Lamp and stove collecting is a great (if somewhat addictive) hobby, with lots of very nice people who are very supportive if you get difficulties with a lamp or stove. If you do not know, just look in the search facility, or ask a question. Also, if you need a spare, just post a "wanted" notice, and most times you will be lucky that a member has the bit you are looking for. Welcome aboard - Steve.
lol, I cant wait to get more i really want a Vapalux m320 I'm heading to Yorkshire next Thursday for a holiday and I'm hoping to pick up a few lamps while I'm there I pumped the lamp a bit more before turning the control cock on and its burning away nicely, cant wait to take it camping. thanks again everyone your help is really appreciated.
