Can anyone give me any dates on chalwyn oil lamps I have what I think is a complete set 9 in total but really can't seem to find any info on them many thanks
I know they made hurricane lamps with names like Tempest, Tropic , Pilot , Far East etc and also Paraffin road lamps, didn't think they ever had a set though, can you show a photo?
@Tony loveday Welcome from Queensland Australia. As Paul said, perhaps some photos could help. Cheers Pete
I know that Chalwyn Tropic and Feuerhand lanterns were used as tent lights by the Swedish armed forces when I served in the army 1988-1989. Regards Matti Kucer
ok first there are Tornado,Tempest,Lynx,New Pilot,Pilot,New Lynx,Far East,Tropic,Flag I know the pilot and lynx were originally Hot Blast and later replaced with the New Pilot and New Lynx cold blast lamps (they really thought about the name ),the tropic and far east are the most common ,the Flag one is curious as its the only one i have ever seen ,slightly smaller than the tropic all the lamps were made in great Britain Hope this helps
Hi @Tony loveday , welcome from the Scottish Highlands. That’s quite a collection. I’ve been told by one or two members here that when you get to around three hundred lamps, you know you’re serious! Anyway, more she’d space equals more lamps, simple! Stevie
Yes @Tony loveday you definitely need a bigger shed. As Stevie said, more shed, more lamps ..... it’s a win win situation. Cheers Pete
Thanks guys have mentioned your advise to the wife... She is now tracking you down, best of luck... Bigger shed next year I think
Just Lurvely ... ... Have you got a good fuel supplier in Sheffield , S Yorkshire to keep em all a' lighting ?
Hi, at the week end I found a reasonably good condition Chalwyn Pilot I intend to restore. However, I can't find out how to remove the burner/wick holder from the lamp, and don't want to "force" in any way in case I break something. Could you show me how it comes off on your good condition one?
Hi they did a hot blast and a cold blast chalwyn pilot lamp, hot blast being the original, the cold blast simply twists in to 2 small lugs on the side of the lamp, and then lifts out as a complete unit The hot blast has a cover that fits over the burner, this simply pushes on, if you can remove this then that gives you access to the burner, hope this helps
Mine is the hot blast...looks like I am in for some serious repair as the neck of the tank in which the burner sits basically separated from the tank as it was rust-bound to the burner itself...damn me, I should have been more patient and soaked it in workshop hero rust remover first...though it looks so thin I doubt it would have changed anything...anyway, thanks, will fix it...
I think Bairstow Bros, the same people who bought Willis &Bates (Bialaddin), also was a distributor for Chawlyn lanterns at one time.
Thanks George, I will look into that, the name does ring a bell. Will let you know if I find anything. Cheerz Tony
@Tony loveday I have a few green Tropic lamps marked on the top MKII 1955, assume they were military use.
Yes, I have it on very good authority that they were catalogued by the military as:- 'Lamp, stealth, hostile situations, for use in...' i.e. they gave out so little light they didn't reveal your position to the enemy and thereby attract snipers...
I have a small gremlin wizard with 1953 Ja. 12159 stamped on it and a larger gremlin with 1952 H. C. C. L on it, would love to know what they stand for, As for the Tropic I never new that thanks, And if you won't to sell one let me know Gary
@Tony loveday i will have a look at what I have, I recently sold 2 on EBay. I have also had Gremlin lamps with those dates on but not sure what they mean.
@Tony loveday I have looked in the shed and this is the only dated Chalwyn I have left, so I’ll be keeping it. But you can see the stamps on the top, sometimes they are hard to see so often missed.
Hiya, I'm new to the site, and have just been bitten by the bug for collecting oil lamps, particularly Chalywn ones, having just added three of them in the last few days to the two I already had.
Welcome @Sammi Jane from Toowoomba Queensland Australia. Hope to see some pictures and posts of your lanterns. Enjoy Pete
