Hi all, this was my very first fettle...well second as the first was a Coleman stove 425C which helped. The lantern is a 220F and was my father's. It was pretty difficult to separate several parts. Looks like a bead of rust formed on just 1 or 2 threads on several pieces. No significant rust was found in the fount. I also don't have the check-valve tool. The CV was stuck but I freed with with a coat hanger then sprayed with penetrating oil. It finally freed up after a couple hours soaking and prodding with the coat hanger. I made some stupid mistakes since I hadn't discovered the OldTown Coleman Repairs videos series. I broke up a fair amount of green paint on the fount while removing the frame when the base rest started moving. I didn't even notice for a while... The paint is still flaking off an I figured I should apply some type of clear coat to abate that. What do you all recommend ? Also a tip that took a few days to discover: The self tapping screw to the air intake tube which connects to the tip cleaner was stuck really good. It's a phillips head machine screw. I hate phillips screws to be honest...I put liquid wrench on it and waited. Tried again, no luck. Heated with heat gun, cooled and repeated...no luck. Sprayed with degreaser...no luck. Filed down a screw driver tip to get better purchase on the head...no good. Finally, what worked what a tip I found on the web. I put some honing compound on the screw driver tip. It grabbed and the screw came out.
Welcome to CPL @snek_no_step Depending on how bad the flaking is, a clear coat will help. Use an automotive paint as it will be fuel resistant. It doesn't need to be heat resistant.
Since you are in the U.S. I have the answer you need regarding clear coat. I always use VHT clear gloss engine enamel with wonderful success. Sometimes they do turn out glossy, sometimes you can't tell they have clear coat unless you look closely. I am mostly on the Coleman Collectors Forum and there clear coat is a touchy subject, but my results get mostly positive reactions besides "clear coat makes it not original so you might as well repaint". If you repaint use Rustolium hunter green. I buy the large tall professional cans with great results.
