I have been working on a Veritas 350 for quite some time. When I first got it, on a hunch I tried to light it and it fired up and burned brightly. It was rather grubby though so I stripped it down to clean it. The metal burner nozzle screen was quite blocked so I gave it a light clean with a brass wire brush and the screen just fell apart. I ordered some 1mm stainless mesh sheet to replace it. It went in ok and I reassembled the lamp. It fired up again but it was rather dim even at full pressure. The burner was also glowing bright red by the time I extinguished the lamp. Everything in the lamp has been stripped and cleaned so all I can think of is that perhaps the mesh I used is too fine. I have some 1.5mm and 2mm sheets sat in my eBay shopping basket, but first wanted to see if anyone has any advice or links to material you have used successfully in the past to replace damaged screens? Thank you.
When the burner glows bright red, it looks to me like the opposite is true: The mesh you have is too coarse. The glowing happens when the small blue flamelets do not move far enough away from the burner screen, or the mixture even starts to burn inside the chamber. From time to time burner screens from the Swiss Hasag 551L lanterns turn up in the bay, maybe you can try to find some and they might fit. These have a diameter of 18.5 mm and a mesh size of 0.7 mm. The alternative would be to use a double layer of the mesh you have.
A double thickness didn’t work but a quadruple layer had it burning great for over an hour. Thank you!
That's good news. Maybe you find a single / double layer mesh more suitable. On the other hand: never change a running system! Have fun with it!
@Scott D I use this rather heavy stainless steel mesh to repair burner caps. One layer only. It works very well, but requires cutting with a Dremel cutting wheel. Cheers Tony
Yes, John… but I’m cooking goat curry and it’s raining, cold, and I’ve exited the shed (that did have 4 lamps running). Cheers Tony @presscall
