Hi everyone! This is my first post on your forum. I have acquired what i think is a Aladdin A1 with the light green painted base. I have began dismantling it for restoration. I cannot get the clearing rod out of the vaporizer . Are there any tips on doing this? I have soaked the vaporizer in carbie cleaner but the rod will not budge. I have unscrewed the pricker at the top. Would the heat and quench method work as some of the vaporizer tube looks to have soldered joints? Thanks Dave
Welcome, @David Adair. It sounds as if there is a large accumulation of carbon in the generator and it is stopping the pricker rod from coming out. Heat and quench should work. I would use a propane torch rather than MAPP because of the brazing at the joints. Heat to dull red, drop in cold water, then tap out the carbon. You might need to do this a fair few times. Cheers Tony
Well thanks Tony! After several attempts with the propane torch the rod came free. I gave it a quick clean. Now I have to unblock the jet and the lantern should fire up! Cheers Dave
Welcome to CPL @David Adair To unblock a jet I use the same method as Tòny suggested for the generator. Heat and quench then use a fine wire to finish off. Wire 0.15 mm ( 0.006"). Regarding the generator, if there is that much carbon in it then you may have to mechanically remove the rest of the carbon. A brake cable is ideal for the job. And don't forget the loop, enter from the top. Be careful not to damage the nipple thread.
Great tips there! I was going to use a rifle cleaning jag but haven't got one small enough! The cable is a great idea! It is a really well made lantern. I was lucky there were two of these Aladdin's in the shop and I spotted stress cracks on the other ones fuel tank rim. This one was the better of the two. I will put a picture up when i get it going! Not much chance of something like this lantern being made in quality and quantity in Australia now days! Cheers Dave
The Austramax is still a great quality lantern, but i wish they had stayed with a metal air bleed screw instead of plastic
Hi there me again, I used the brake cable to clear the vapourizer tube out and it did a great job. Unfortunately whilst holding the jet to heat and quench in order to unblock it I melted and crushed it whilst holding it with needle nose plyers. I think i can re tap the thread to about m5 and use a jet off something. Any idea what the original jet size for the Aladdin A1 was? thanks Dave
David, that may work? but those jets have to fit right when they are screwed in so they seat properly down on to the machined surface of the generator body or they will leak under pressure and the brightness of the light will be poor, another way to clear blocked jets is to soak them in CLR for a few hours, then use compressed air to blow them out, i you would like a replacement jet then i will send you one, Frank
@David Adair When you say “jet” do you mean the nipple that screws into the burner? If so, I have one. Edit: I see Frank has offered you one. Best regards Tony
This is the result of heat and tap and working & twisting a stranded cable (Broken car bonnet release cable) through the loop from the top (Also Heat Quench)
