Pleased to have saved this A 1940 Canadian 249, with original aluminium preheater cup.

Decided to keep the polish away from this one, simply gave it a clean with carby cleaner and orange agent.

These old 240’s were made to last!

It looks good. What year was the aluminium cup discontinued? I have a 1944 painted 249 Scout with a cast aluminium preheat cup.

I couldn’t say for sure @Andrew T , but I do have a ‘46 with the pressed brass horseshoe preheater so I’d guess around 1945!

I have other 1944 scouts with the pressed brass cups as well. I haven't seen any 1943 249,s.

I have a ‘49 Coleman 249 and it has the horse shoe cup. These lanterns are almost indestructible! :D/:thumbup::thumbup:

The lantern is very well preserved from 1940. Did you polish it as much as you could or just wash it?

I think you can do more with this coating of dirt and corrosion. My friend once polished such a lantern with a liquid for developing paper photos. Everything has a beautiful silver sheen, although this won't last for a long time with constant use. When I restore old lanterns from the 50s and 60s, I never use them for their intended purpose. Usually, they just stand for beauty on the sideboard, and that's it. For lighting, it's much easier for me to take a modern flashlight. Of course, sometimes you want to feel more romantic, take an old lantern on a date, but even this happens rarely, so almost never.

Hi @kamaveles , I just gave it a wash. I like to keep them looking old for a while, and when I get bored after a week / month / year I get the polish out

My book says 1938, so a first year production is nice to have!
