Hi all, i've had the above lamp in my shed for about 13 years (only just realised what model it is - and how old) It has the stamped no 763XA underneath, I'm after any advice on how to go about lighting the lamp as i've never tried or had it lit, i'm guessing a few parts may need replacing as it hasn't been lit for so long. Many thanks for any advice.
You need to give us a picture here because these are often missing the outer part of the pre heater and it won't work without. Pump around 15 strokes. Open the fuel valve to fill the pre heater wick with paraffin. Hold up the outer cover and light the wick. You have to hold the outer cover up above the flame for a minute or so until it warms up. Just keep lowering it until you can leave it down with a blue flame. Then give it a couple of minutes before opening the main valve to fire up the mantles. They are tricky things to make work right and often the outer cover has been taken off to leave room to insert the meth torch and pre heat like a normal Tilley. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil, at least i now have an idea of how to light the thing, will post a pic so you can check it is all there - if you don't mind! Much appreciated
Great find in your garage Dan I've recently acquired my BR49 through a friend and posted a similar question here: http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/3773 I think mines the BR49 - it's got straight legs, whereas yours look like they're bent!! Hope you don't think I'm hijacking your thread, but... I've fired mine up and it leaks around the pre-heater filling tube; I've got no spare washers at the moment - need to put an order in with Ross! Is it a standard gland washer that fits in there? From what Neil says, it looks like yours is intact (as is mine). Is yours painted gold, or is that bare brass? Neil, do you know if these babies were painted in standard Tilley colours, or some other colouring to suit the needs of BR? I like to be (historically) as accurate as I can with my restoration work!
Yes complete and original. Nice find. Tilley made them with their standard colour range but some used by the Railways had them painted in company colours. These later ones tend to be standard Tilley though. ::Neil::
Many thanks for the info so far guys, next step is to have a go at lighting it and see if anything leaks - will let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
Having forgotten about this for a while... Until clearing the shed again, think it would be better with someone who would appreciate it, so i'm thinking of selling it. Any ideas for how much i could get for it ( not tested - so would sell as not working ) Any advice appreciated. Many thanks in advance
I don't think anyone will give a value on here, you are likely best to put it on ebay and let it find it's level. Or if you have a price in mind, PT me as I would be interested if we can agree on a price. Best regards Matt.
Thought that would be the case and is understandable, but thanks for replying anyway. May just put it on here rather than going through ebay though - just gotta decide a fair price although have a better idea now.
Hi Dan, Neil's directions are perfect. The only thing I'd add is to not let in too much kerosene into the cup. All you really need is to get the wick saturated. Letting in more kerosene is not a problem other than it will burn a long time. BTW, you can also just add meths to the bowl (fill it all the way up) leaving the outer cover attached and heat it that way. This will probably work better outside if it's windy as the pre-heater burner with kerosene does not tolerate breezes very well (gets very sooty). After you do it a few times, lighting with the kero heater becomes second nature. A neat lantern. Dan
