Another early post war Hasag 351L style lamp made in Leipziger Werke, GDR. There are no markings at all. The filler cap thread was completely worn off, so it was exchanged for a Px wing cap of the same period which fits exactly. Matthias
Hi Darryl, Mewa is somehow the abbreviation for "Metallwarenkombinat", which was a kind of association of different metal working companies in GDR, mainly in the automotive sector, but also manufacturing lamps, lanterns, stoves etc. and other metal products. The manufacturer of that lantern is correctly named "Leipziger Werke VEB" as Matthias mentioned, which was later renamed "VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig" (VEB = Volkseigener Betrieb = publicly owned company). The type of that lantern is correct 351L, same as the Hasag pre-war versions. For these lacquered steel versions 351L (and later 361L) there was no brand name used by the VEBs, but they built also the nickel plated brass export versions 51L (and later 61L), which carried the "Hasag" brand name for reasons of brand awareness, even though manufactured in GDR. Regards, Martin
@Martin K. thank you for the history and in-site into these very well made lanterns I restored one back into working order. It’s a very cool part of my collection and now I have some information about it to talk to others about it, thank you Martin.
