Hello everyone, Well of course this lantern is not going to be an easy fix. Looks like the check valve is stuck. But thanks to everyone who posted I believe I can call T. W. Sands for relief. Terribly irritating as most of you have had this problem in the past. On the bright side the lantern is cosmetically gorgeous. It is completely nickel over brass and looks well plated. Was wondering if any one knew years of completely nickel over brass manufacturing? Thanks for any feedback you provide. I'm really hoping sands has the tool. Regards Mark Baldwin
Does anyone on the site sell this tool? I guess its known as an NRV removal tool. Not really sure what NRV stands for, here in the states there just called checkvalves???
Stu (loco7lamp) was selling these tools (look in the trade section); but if not available from him, find yourself a piece of steel rod that fits snugly in the pump tube; cut a slot the width of the NRV through one end with an angle grinder; square the other end so that it takes a socket... And you've got a home-made NRV remover. If you don't want to do that I can make you one, but post to USA will be relatively expensive. Be careful of using tools that don't fit snugly in the pump tube - they tend to slip and ruin the NRV making it harder to extract. I always soak the tube and NRV in penetrating oil before attempting extraction. Cheers Tony
G'day Mark, In case you have not seen one here is the NRV from an Aladdin. The leadwasher is not shown. but fits on the tapered collar LHS. Here is a NRV removal tool I made from a 1/2" bolt. The slot is 5mm (W) x 5mm (D). The tape is there to make it a snug fit in the pump tube and prevent damage. on this one I hade access to a lathe hence the 5mm pilot hole you can see in the bottom of the slot. I used it as a guide. Regarding the age, there is not a lot of information regarding these lanterns. So timelines are a bit iffy. A picture of the lantern would help. God luck
Hi Mark I had this problem with my first Alladin 1A, it appeared that the NRV as frozen by old fuel turning to a varnish consistency. After much thought I filled the font to what I believed to cover the bottom of the pump with a general purpose thinners (very similar to paint thinners). I first determined that the thinners used would dissolve the fuel vanish. I let it soak for a couple of days, then emptied out the thinners / varnish mix, a brown coffee colour. I then made a stopper that fitted the pump tube, much like a bung and with a flexible tube fitted to an air compressor and also to the bung I fitted the bung in place securing to the pump tube by hand pressure only. MOST IMPORTANTLY I ADJUSTED THE COMPRESSOR'S AIR DELIVERY TO A MAXIMUM OF 20 PSI. I then applied 20PSI air pressure and after a few seconds the NRV appeared to grudgingly open. I then repeated the thinner soaking treatment and then after a couple of days, leaving the thinners in the tank, used the actual pump to cycle the NRV. It wasn't too long and the valve operated freely. This worked for me, I could just be incredibly lucky. But hey, could be worth a try. Cheers Peter
Hello everyone! Thank you for the input! I think I'm going to try the removal method. The problem is I don't have a lot of other tools to make the one I need to use on the valve. I do have a dremel that might work. With this in mind I will have to purchase new bits for it. I would like to try the thinner method but I do not have a compressor. I searched the trading post but did not see anyone who had a removal tool for sale. I tried using a long thin punch and poked it through the hole in the valve and tapped it but I could not tap it free. I'm feeling irritated with the situation so I decided to step back and gather my thoughts before something was broken. If anyone comes up with another idea it would be greatly appreciated. Regards Mark
Hi Mark Soak the beastie in thinners anyway, give it a good long soaking and use the lamp's pump to try and dislodge the NRV. It will only cost the thinners, and it's a chance it may work without the 20PSI air delivery from a compressor, you may have to persevere with more days soaking. Worth a try anyway. Let us know how it goes. Cheers Peter
Hi Mark Just a further thought, if you're gunna soak the beastie dribble some thinners into the pump, that way you'll have thinners working on the NRV from both ends as it were. Other than what's already been put forward there is not much more that can be suggested. Perhaps carrying out the right rictuals and sacrifices to fictitious gods my help?!!? Cheers Peter
Hello everyone, I just received an email from Sands and they carry the NRV and the removal key/tool. Great news! Thank you Peter, Tony and all who posted for the advice. Now its just a matter of waiting for the postman. The fount is soaking in thinner now. Regards, Mark
Hi Everyone This is an old thread but this might be useful to others now. The tool made here by @ROBBO55 is great and I've seen others expanding on it by using a "lock down" using a spare plunger cap but its a pile of work. I was dealing also with a severely stuck Aladdin NRV so started with a tool made from a M6x200mm gal bolt which had removed several other NRVs. Sure enough the tool was riding up as I increased pressure and the normal tapping, shocking, tightening did not work. The jet was now badly rounded (see pic) and patience depleted. I harked back to other bigger jobs and invariably the correctly delivered tap/clunk/crack will shift just about anything which led me to the rattle-gun with a 5/16 socket on the end of the bolt. Light on the trigger at first ..... and it released immediately!
