Hello all: Great to see such a plethora of information. This Coleman Quicklite lantern followed me home from an auto jumbo. We replaced the generator and fill cap seal and lubed the pump. It has new mantles. When we lit it off the mantles do not burn bright white but rather an orange/yellow colour and show a small flame. The mantles have some black soot on them that did not burn away. Any thoughts on why the mantels are not burning bright white would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Jim, three things that are possible, the air intake tube has some obstruction, hornet nest, spider web, or it could be the generator is car-boned up inside, or it does not have enough pressure i the tank, a picture would be great, Frank
I'm betting something is either stuck or clogged. Try fishing a wire through the air intake tube. What you're talking about actually sounds like a partial obstruction of the air intake. Sadly, for me, this has meant sacrificing those mantles. If it was a dirt-dobber, it would look more like a bon fire. ...though while you have the top off, pressurize the tank and run fuel through the generator. Does it spray a straight stream or a symetrical mist? If so, you're golden, and if not, investigate.
Other than those already mentioned, that could also sometimes be due to an enlarged jet orifice or even a slightly leaky jet(gas tip) due to it loosening up a bit from repetitive thermal cycling. Check that as well.
