On a Tilley dish heater where should I locate the preheater? nearer the mantle or more at the bottom of the tube. On the image below I have a leak in the circled area, how is this sealed? I unscrewed it but it wouldn't come off (didnt want to force it) Its the part that raises the cleaning wire.
Hi Get it as close as you can to the mantle and out of a draught if you can There is a chimney that Tilley supplied that went over the burner and mantle to help direct the heat where it was meant to go.. not hard to make/reproduce If it flares up you will need to pre heat again as soon as poss to keep the heat have you replaced any of the seals yet? have a look at the ‘what do I call this part’ for Tilley lamps
The black knob unscrews to the left The gland nut (knurled) also unscrews to the left The seal may be stuck inside, rock hard and a bugger to remove.. some folks burn them out or use a combination of dental pick and a small blade screwdriver.. hope that helps ps I’ve used old spray cans as a draught chimney but two bean tins pop riveted will suffice
@scudo What do I call this part?: Tilley The black control knob screws off (anticlockwise) and does the gland nut. Inside the gland nut there will be one or two old small washers or O-rings. These need to be removed and replaced. I always use two of the Fettlebox O-rings in the gland nut as this provides a very tight seal without needing excess force on the gland nut. [There's actually a longer story about the use of two O-rings for this function, but I haven't yet got around to writing it!] Tony
I got some viton and used that to replace a couple. My intention is to get 1x lamp & 1x heater running, I already have 3x stoves working. Once that is done I will pay more detailed attention to the others and start to clean them all up. One issue is having to work outside (Scotland) as my small shed is packed with tools although I have a three sided lean-to that gives some shelter from the Scottish weather.
As long as it has its back to the prevailing wind, you may be pleasantly surprised at how cosy it will be with a Tilley heater running.
Still got issues. I have checked with soapy water and dont appear to have any leaks. I have used a tin can as wind shield for pre heat. I have managed to light it but only get 3/4 minutes before it dies, the mantle does start to glow red but not all over. I have put about 30 pumps in to pressurize it. Any suggestions?
But how much kero ? With 1.5 pints (850ml) kero and 60 or 70 pump strokes you heater should keep you toasty for at least 2 hours.
That could be the issue as I am just testing to see if it works ok so probably less than half pint in it, I will put more in and pressurize it more and see how it goes.
