Here is one of my finds a Coleman 239A (I was told) this must be an early one because it shares the same valve body as the Coleman 238A but this one came with Preheater torch bung plugged and base burner plate has the hole for Preheater burner tube. This one dates from A/42 (First quarter of 1942) and it’s in decent to nice shape (I qualify this as 7 to 7.5 here are a couple pictures of someone needs more detailed ones please let me know, I will glad take them. Below are pictures as found Here are some pictures after fettling And finally the money shot
Was this lantern found with the Humphrey type mantle spigot installed?? Does it screw into the burner without modification to any parts?? What burner nozzle is the installed mantle you show tied to?? A petromax type ceramic????
@burndout 1.- Yes, was found with the Humphrey spigot and I still keep it. 2.- yes, no mods. 3.- Petromax style but this one came from a 240 I have and I bet is the same as the Petromax ceramic burner. thanks @JEFF JOHNSON @Toby Garner indeed, this was a great find more than 18 months ago but was finally brought to the states.
@Pancholoco1911 Well done on that lantern! Where was it when you found it? Can you please post a photo of the “Humphrey spigot” now that it’s off the lantern? Cheers Tony
Not an early one this is possibly one of the last batch made. Most of these lanterns are dated 1940-1941. I do know of one with an ink stamp in the base "Model 239" which is also dated A 42. With so few survivors it is not safe to be certain but so far the production range seems to be A-40 to A-42. ::Neil::
A great find and superb restoration. This must be one of the very few Coleman lanterns that actually came with the Preston loop type generators. How big is the lantern as compared to the 237?
Thanks Neil for posting the comparison picture,,, This could be the only one I’ve seen before CPL and my 240. the 238A would be a hard one to find
There are a couple of 238A in South Africa that I know of but all of this style lantern are rare. Until recently I had assumed they were an export lantern as the few we knew of had been found in SA except my 240 which turned up in Argentina and subsequently gifted to me by A very generous collector. A few have now appeared in the US so perhaps no longer seriously rare but certainly uncommon. You might find this interesting. It is the only Coleman paper so far found showing these lamps and enabed me to work out which models they were. ::Neil::
In addition to that, there had also been a couple of US patents filed by the Coleman Lamp and Stove Company with a lantern and preheater that resemble that of the 238A. It looks like these are from the same inventor of the famous Coleman 242 as well: Mr. Boyd W. Tullis. Files attached:-
