You need to add some graphite packing. Remove the gland nut and add some new/extra graphite packing around the shaft, then screw on the gland nut again. The graphite will compress into shape and seal well around the shaft. I use graphite sheeting that I cut into thin strips and wind around the shaft. A quick fix to get things going is to use teflon tape. Double it and twist into a string which is then wound around the shaft. It doesn't have the same feel as graphite, but works well enough.
