    Had this one for a long time, but just wanting to confirm its actual model designation. I'll chance my arm on Tilley X256 Guardsman, but will be happily advised by anyone with greater knowledge (and that wouldn't be hard!) Many thanks in advance - Phillip (apologies if too many images - haven't used the upload feature before)

    That is a Tilley X-246 lantern and those were first produced in 1946, there are several versions, but your lantern is an early one, those lanterns are commonly known as the pork pie lanterns because of the shape of the tank which resembles a British pork pie, the production run lasted about 4 years.

    Many thanks Jeff - that was quick! Yes, old fumble-fingers meant 246 but as luck would have it... BTW I've seen some with the letter A or B after the numbers. Does mine have one of those or, when I'm ordering parts, is "early X246 (pork pie)" enough info to get it right?

    That’s great, Pancholoco1911. Many thanks indeed. It’s not running too badly - holds pressure, pump plunger doesn’t come back out under pressure, but it’s had no attention aside from filling and starting, so a set of new washers will be a nice Xmas present. And finally, can the finish on the tank be polished (assuming it is original). The surface seems rougher than my Companion camp stove.

    Yours is a straight X246 (no letter); and “pork pie” will give the clue to the correct washers etc.

    Best regards

    As to the tank, yours looks in reasonable condition so I would clean with soap and water first, then use a car polish to finish the clean/polish. Anything more aggressive will take off the paint.

    Cheers

    Wow! You must think me a dill for not recognising it was painted. Colour blindness can be a pain at times! I’ll take my time and give it all a very gentle clean up as I start taking things apart when the washers arrive (ordered from Fettlebox last night ) Many thanks Tony, Pancholoco and Jeff!

    Thanks Robbo55! Yours look terrific :-) I’m looking forward to getting mine into slightly nicer condition than at present. Stay safe and well!

    @Phillip McN

    I just noticed you're from the Blue Mountains... There's at least one other member here from that region.

    Looks like you have yourself a very nice pork pie there, they are very easy and a strong and reliable Tilley lamp, enjoyment will follow that's for sure, good luck can't wait to see the money shot (lamp up and running).
    Enjoy.
