Hello, I was able to get this lantern through a swap with a collector friend from Denmark, thanks Harder! It is a well preserved Primus 1060 from the Danish Army. The tank is marked "AU z", which indicates 1955. However, the ring of the carrying frame is stamped "100356" which again probably points to 1956 as I have read in other postings. I am very happy about this quite rare lantern. Primus 1060
Yea, interestingly, this style vent came later on the Coleman 236/237 The primus 1060 had that style from the start in 1954, ( I know that the Coleman 238B had one similar though)
Other than that, the only difference I can spot between the above army Primus 1060 and the Coleman 236 on the external appearance would be:- 1. The characteristic Primus double lip/fold around the base of the fount(disregarding the decal) which is without the stamped Coleman logo, date code and lettering. 2. The perforations on the collar. 3. Shape, colour and inscription of the valve wheel. 4. Embossed 'PRIMUS' lettering on the frame/bottom plus hexagon clamp nut instead of winged nut. 5. Etching/inscription(Schott / Primus) on the glass globe. 6. Shape of vent nut. 7. Probably some geometric difference on the burner casting too. Even the characteristic fount depression around the port of the 3-piece filler cap follows that of the Coleman style. I'm not sure if the overall colour is exactly the Coleman Seafoam/light green or some other shade of green.
The burner casting is quite different, even though the basic design is the same. Primus made it much more complicated with several pieces that then screw together. A much more expensive way of doing it. You can see the burner in this post or this one. I have never found out if Primus had permission from Coleman to make this model or if the complexities, they added to the burner allowed them to avoid any patents. Many parts look to be interchangeable, even though I have only used a 236 generator and burner head on a 1060.
hi, I will compare the Primus with the Coleman this weekend. I should have a Coleman 236 or 237 somewhere, I just need to find it and probably dust it off .
Glad you got it Leo - and especially that the original Primus globe made it as well. A swap between friends with two winners - is a good swap ;-)
