I've finally got around to cleaning and servicing this Veritas Superb. Very satisfying to see it alight for the first time in 20+ years. I didn't want to polish the chrome too much because I want to preserve the original Name transfer. I read with interest some of the earlier posts about dating these lamps; sadly these have too much rust for me to be able to see any date stamp, so would welcome any ideas about the year of manufacture. A question for those more experiences users: what sort of filler is best to get the meths into the cup? The Glass will not lift sufficiently for me to use my usual (petromax) spout. Any suggestions would be very welcome.
@tilleyscout Nice looking Superb which seems to be running well! I’ve never had an issue with mine. I use a syringe with a piece of model car fuel hose jammed on the end, I don’t know the actual material, it was given to me years ago by my daughter’s then boyfriend and now husband. It seems meths proof and extremely flexible. Regards, Jeremy
Looks good ! - I use a yellow coleman globe in mine (not out of choice ) But this does allow a little wiggle room to get the meths spout in. That globe is hard to come by ! Otherwise I use the plastic squeezy "wash bottles" with spout. Loads on Amazon etc..
I use one of these. It's called a lab wash bottle and you can get them dirt cheap on Amazon or eBay. If you're careful you can gently heat up the nozzle and bend it into an S shape to get it into the right position. Maybe put some wire inside it first so it doesn't kink and stop the meths flowing. With some care you should be able to clean the nickel plating around the logo and when you get close to the transfer, try using a cotton bud for the trickier bits. Don't try to mask off the area with any sort of tape, it will instantly pull off the transfer - I did this on a RM blow torch logo and I nearly cried when the transfer came off!!!!! Like Jeremy said, Superbs work well and look great!
