I have a Tilley R1 Radiator with an unusual and poorly performing burner, that I am hoping someone can identify if any parts are missing or if it's original.

The air intake is located at the top, which results in it sucking it's own exhaust and the flame burning outside the mantle:

When tilted or in a breeze so it does not suck it's exhaust, it works great:

Attached are some photos of the burner for reference. Any advice would be greatly welcome.

    @Matt Tilley

I have not seen this design of burner on any heater before. Does the burner spigot fit over the vaporiser without any major play in the same way as on your lanterns?

I look forward to seeing if anyone else has one of these. @Mackburner

    Regards, Jeremy

I don't have many radiators here and I don't have any images of the dismantled burners but I suspect this is a cast brass type missing the outer cowl with its cap piece and the side tube that has been adapted. I have certainly never seen one like this before and I doubt it came from the factory like that although with Tilley parts I have learnt over the years never to say never when odd stuff like this turns up. ::Neil::

Wow it's like someone has converted half the burner some how by taking parts off and replacing them with their own design, or is it from another brand other than Tilley.
Here are 2 photos of one of my Tilley heater burner pulled apart, the photos aren't the best but that's all I have at the moment.

    Interesting?

@X246A, the burner spigot fits over the vapouriser as it should. It's also a good fit for the Tilley mantle.

@Buggerlugs, the internals of my burner (air and fuel mixer) look the same as yours. I don't have any other Tilley Radiators for comparison, but in your photo the outer cowl looks like it's made of steel. It's plausible this rusted out and was replaced by custom made brass one.

However, as @Mackburner said, never say never with Tilley parts.

Hi mate here are some photos of 2 different types of Tilley burners for the R1 radiator.
All the external parts are brass no steel on them as far as I can tell, not sure about the internal parts though.
The first one couldn't be the same as yours without the outer cowl (because of the style) as you will see from the photos.

    R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 2.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 3.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 4.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 5.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 6.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 7.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 8.jpg R1 Burner Head Late 1950's 9.jpg

The second style an earlier R1 burner head could be the same as yours (without the outer cowl).
The top part of the head is what I was talking about, (in the first picture) that part could have been modified for some reason?

    R1 Burner Head 1940's 1.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 2.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 4.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 5.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 6.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 7.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 8.jpg R1 Burner Head 1940's 9.jpg

That's my best guess and with Tilley who knows.
    Good luck mate.

I have two of these, one came from Bob, Lamp Doctor, and both are posted on this forum some where.
I have never been able to get mine to run well so as Neil believes there was probably more to them.
Another one I know of was on a steel Kopsen Kayen.

@Anthony, many thanks for sharing this. Mystery solved, I have a legitimate R1 burner.

@Buggerlugs, perhaps Tilley were only considering the hanging position when they designed it. In this position, the burner is tilted enough to prevent it sucking in it's own exhaust.

    More likely a Kopsen burner.

A good rare collectable burner

I’ll go through my box of Tilley/Kayen burners later this week to see if I’ve got something similar to Matt’s

    Cheers

@Anthony, many thanks. I’ll hold onto this interesting Kopsen burner and see if I can track down a typical Tilley one.

@Tony Press, very interested to see if there are others or variants like it.

Yes, it work really well when hung. The centre of gravity causes it to tilt forward enough to suck fresh air.

How interesting.. the lip on the steel part does suggest perhaps it originally had another piece that sits over? maybe with a tube at 90 degrees..?

then I thought perhaps it was used on some sort of animal heater at an angle as demonstrated.. but then why not just use a standard burner?

    good old Tilley!
