hi guys iv been having trouble with one of my stormlamps its got a flame around the mantle i have used the exact same procedure that i use for my other storm lamp which is nice and bright and have no trouble with flame around the mantle.

    the procedure is as follows.

fill with 1 and a half pints of paraffin

make sure control cock is closed

    tighten pump

soak preheater in meths attach to vaporizer and light.

    while preheating pump 15 times

blow out preheater when nearly burnt out

    preheat a second time

turn needle control knob on when meths has nearly burnt out

take of preheater and pump 100 times.

This works perfectly for my red stormlamp but not for my gold one any advice would be brilliant guys.

oh and iv tryed turning the cleaning needle a good few time to clean the vaporizer.

    thanks for your time guys

    steven

    Hello Steven,

    Welcome.

Your procedure looks pretty good to me, I'm assuming that there is a slight burn in period at low pressure once it's lit. Most folks on this side of the pond lack the patience to do it right.

Have by chance tried swapping the vaporizers? The most common cause of flame outside the mantle that I've seen is a worn tip.

Of course if I'm wrong then we'll both get an education

Just make sure the seals are good, nothing like a dribble of paraffin to upset the womenfolk. :rage:

Stay with us and we'll have you pulling the breakers to enjoy the quiet hiss of a Tilley or two.

HAHA iv thought of doin that myself :)

my stepson wants to camp soon just in the back yard and he asked if he could have the tilley out so im happy about that. kids need to know that if the power goes out you have to know how to get light and warmth in to the house and that could be his wee job to light the tilleys aslong as he shows responsibility and knows the dangers.

It's always good when the younger generations are interested in our liquid fueled devices. The most important thing is a good teacher.

iv been swaping parts over and i think its the burner gallery after taking the mantle of and checking how it looks burning its burning uneven one side the blue flames are close to the burner the other side there coming 2 inches down.

ive tryed cleaning it but still its not working properly but when i put the burner from my working tilley on it, it worked fine.

pity its the burner cus there pretty expensive oh well the joys of collecting lol.

Jonty, All is not lost! Is the burner the later type that has one of the three air collars held in place by a split-pin, or is it the earlier type that has three screwed air buttons locating the burner? I have a few spare burner heads. Let me know what type it is and you can have one for postage only. Steve.

Maybe, but don't go buying one - I'd guess any of the Brits here will be able to supply you with a decent used burner.

I've a box of unused ones somewhere around here but I haven't seen them for years...

Sounds to me like a worn out burner too , i had the same problem recently myself thinking it was the vapouriser until i tried another better burner on the same vap tube & was nearly blinded by the light ( Manfred Mann )  :D

As you did it's better to try methodicaly all the options & check carefully for wear on all the working parts by trying other burners / vap tubes that you know work well on other lamps :D

    Stu :D
